Puppies...*sigh*

This is not a serious "rant", but more like a "good lord I forgot what puppies can be like, and right now he has exhausted me" type post lol (it's been about 7 yrs since I had a puppy in my house).

We love Bruce, he is smart (learning his commands well), and very sweet, but wow when he has his puppy moments he really has them lol. I forgot about the sharp little needle teeth, and how much they love to try them out. I forgot how short of an attention span they have, and how they can conveniently "forget" a command when something more interesting comes along.

He is learning "off" (instead of leave it), and knows what it means unless it involves the kids or cats (we are being VERY consistent with teaching him proper kid and cat etiquette but this seems to be where he forgets most). My kids are pretty hands off with dogs, they love them, but they know how to give them space and respect them and not bug them. Bruce on the other hand needs to learn to do the same with them. I know it will come, I'm on him about it very consistently. Anyway we love him, just felt the need for a little "this is exhausting" rant lol. It will all be very worth it in the end when we have a lovely, well trained doberkid in our family though.

and just for fun, a few pics of him (he has such a rough life). He is only allowed up on the couch when invited by us, and he has had no issue so far with respecting this rule, I was quite impressed with how fast he learned that.

Oh yeah, and when he gets corrected for naughty behavior he is MOUTHY...part of me wishes I understood what he is saying to me at those times, but the rest of me knows I probably don't want to understand his sass.

Hehehe.

I think we get the same amnesia about raising puppies that mommies get about how bad labor pain was.

Only way we'd do it again

I am raising a tough pup of another breed right now, and I find myself saying "You are SUCH a puppy," a lot. To remind *me,* you know, and so as not to kill him daily

Hahaha, this is soooo true. The only reason I had a 2nd child is because of the labor amnesia, had I remembered there would have been no way I would have willingly done it again lol (both of my kids are very worth it though...most of the time ).

He's a pretty typical puppy so far, I have raised tougher ones (and hopefully it stays that way lol), but yeah he is SUCH a puppy, and I need to remind myself over and over as well.

He learned today that sticking his nose down the back of my pants and biting would get a reaction from mom...

I feel your pain. My boy is over a year now (still has his pup moments) and I swear it does get better! But sometimes I just wanted to strangle myself... they are wonderful holy terrors.
I kept telling myself. No puppies ever again. Never, ever... I can't do it.
But now I catch myself thinking... A puppy wouldn't be thaaaat bad.

Bruce is very cute by the way... Spooning with his little whale.

Pray he never discovers that sticking his nose down the front of pants+biting+your husband=EVEN BIGGER REACTION.

My new puppy Toorc is definitely more of a handful than my first Doberman was. He likes to test me and see how many times I say "no" before I finally get up to deter him and THEN he decides to leave whatever it is alone and pounces away nub-a-waggin lol He is now almost 11 weeks old and finally settling into the routine of things. No accidents in over 2 weeks and he can manage being alone now without making the neighbors think he's being brutally murdered Thankfully he has always slept through the whole night otherwise we may have had issues lol

haha, thanks. My son picked him that whale (he has autism and ocean animals are his FAVORITE thing in the whole world). I was shocked that he willingly gave it to Bruce and didn't try to keep it for himself. He was so proud, and still is, that it is Bruce's favorite toy.

OMG, just last night the 3 of us were sitting on the couch. Bruce had his head resting on hubbys lap. For some reason I thought of just what you mentioned, at the same time that apparently hubby and Bruce did too. Bruce did the "look and cock head to the side" thing in that direction as hubby quickly covered himself with his hands lol. I was too busy laughing that we all thought it at the same time, to even attempt to help.

Good to hear that there is hope Bruce doesn't make the neighbors think he is being brutally murdered, but he really only ever has to spend like half an hour at a time in his crate during the day, as I run hubbys business out of the house. I'm sure he would do the same if I left for longer lol. He doesn't make it through the whole night, but he only gets up once, and goes right back to bed after going for a pee so I can handle that.

Damn he is a bitey little devil tonight. He keeps losing his playmates (ie hubby and I say ouch and stop playing with him), but he only remembers that for about 30 seconds after we finally go back to playing.

It's only been a little over 3.5 years since I had a puppy and I feel your pain. I will say Envy, my puppy, is about 5 weeks oler than your puppy and suddenly a week or so ago many of the CRAZY OMG I AM GOING TO KILL HER BEHIAVIORS got quite a bit better THE BITING lordy the biting. Although a Vizsla, not a Dobe, she's the worst bitey dog I've ever had. Honestly though 1-2 weeks ago it was like we made huge progress. She's still a pain in the a** puppy but it is much easier to deal with.

I love Vizslas I'm glad to hear though that there is hope in the next few weeks lol.

Bruce had a big day today. First I had to buy him a coat because he can't stand the cold here, while I was the pet shop I found a flirt pole (I've had a hell of a time finding one, and have been too lazy to make my own). So he got to test that out when I got home, him and the cat were both going for it lol. My daughter also apparently thinks it's great. She watched him play with it, and laughed hysterically the whole time (she is 4).

After he got some time in with his new toy he had his vet appt to have the stitches out of his ears. My vet just loves him, says he has an awesome temperament, and was amazed at how chill he was for the stitch removal. She also commented on what a gorgeous job Dr Staples did on his crop (now lets hope I can get them to stand properly to do the crop job justice lol). I also took him for his first real walk down our street (not many dogs on our street, and none he came into contact with, I'm too paranoid for that until his shots are done)...he is slowly learning how to walk on his leash lol.

He is now happily passed out beside me on the couch, grumbling in his sleep (I can't get over how vocal this dog is).

We did the same thing too with very small walks, only on our street and didn't allow Angus to sniff anything... not much fun for him, but it did get him out and he got to see bikes and cars.
We also had one of our friends bring their dog over (who was fully vaccinated) to play, which was a great thing to do and was great fun!!

I wanted to let you know that as everyone else says, it DOES get better! You have to take the small accomplishments as big ones Angus is 4.5 months old now, and I can say that I do enjoy him now.. the first month was a challenge though!

I don't know if you've mentioned this before, but where in Ontario are you? If you're close to the KW area, someone around here might be able to help (I can, but I'm not the most experienced). Or there is always the posting tutorial sticky

I'm going to take him very soon to play with my girlfriends two labs. They are both fully vaccinated, and dewormed/flea treated etc (they are her and her BFs kids lol). Otherwise, he can start going to our local dogpark once all his vaccines are done (one of the downsides to having a tech as a mom lol I am all too aware of what *can* happen, and it makes me neurotic). I just wanted to wait until his stitches were out before I took him to play with my doggy nephews.

I am just north of Newmarket, Ontario. I do have experience posting ears, it's just been a while. I'm not too worried, but if for some reason I end up having issues I know where to turn. His sponge is still firmly glued to his head and holding his ears perfectly. I called Dr Staples office, and they told me to just leave it, and once it falls off to start posting, so for now that's what I shall do, it makes life easy right now. Plus his one ear along the bell isn't totally healed (stitches are out and it looks good, but it still bleeds a little if bumped), so it works out perfectly with the sponge, I didn't want to tape his ears anyway until that part is 100% healed.

He is passed out again after having his hour of insane puppy time (every night around 8/9pm he loses his freakin mind lol). He was actually humping his stuffed cat tonight, I have never seen a puppy so young trying to hump anything (he's 9 weeks). I guess all that inter species love wore him out.

Just a word of caution - please be careful taking puppies to dog parks. They can develop many bad habits and get overwhelmed by big dogs very quickly. I cringe when I see young puppies at dog parks. I'd rather make sure all there interactions are positive with adult strange dogs when they are puppies. You could create a lifetime of issues with one bad interaction. We can't control what jerks come to dog parks.

Last week I put her under the bed covers...so before she settles down, chew/chew/chew...and shifting around to explore more.
BUT - I felt a nose, on the front of my underware...OMG, races through my head.
Boy did my hands move quickly, and pulled her away, from the family jewels...thinking, "dam, that would have seriously hurt".

Every week gets better, but some puppies do start out as a full time job....we got one this time.
Kelly discovered if she runs under the back deck and the crawl space under our sun room, Dad can't stop her from picking stuff up.
Fixed her "little red wagon" as next few days, out came the leash, for outside trips...eventually, the cause & effect relationship sinks in...lol.

Shell81 - your not alone, but the exhausting time now, pays off big time later // at least, that is what you have to tell yourself...
Kayree & Shell81 - we are South of London, to bad not as close to your puppies // dober play dates, would have been fun.

Not to worry The group that goes to ours at the same time every evening is always the same. I know the people, and the dogs (and they are all well socialized, and a good group). If I go and there are dogs I don't know (I'm talking with Oscar, the Weim I regularly babysit), then I don't stay, we go for a hike instead. It's a small town, and I know the group that goes in the evening. That said, Bruce is by far the first dog I've trained, and I have every intention of being very careful the odd times we do go. I just know the small group that goes will be a great group for socializing, they brought shy Oscar out of his shell quickly, and now he loves other dogs.

I've rambled (again...I'm good a that lol), but thank you, and not to worry, I will be extremely careful, and it isn't going to be a regular thing. I can text the group ahead of time to see if they're the ones there etc before I go. It's really just a group of friends and their dogs but the dog park is big and fully fenced so perfect for them to have playdates (provided it's just the small friendly group). I certainly will never let him play and interact with dogs I don't know. I should have specified that ours isn't your average dog park, and usually just that one little group. I normally HATE dog parks, but having gotten to know these people/dogs, I'm comfortable as long as it's just them.

Hahaha, good thing you moved quickly!

I have to say, today has been a good day for Bruce. I put the tree up today, and it only took 3 corrections ("Off", and remove him, make him sit and praise) for him to learn that chewing it was not acceptable, and he is now completely ignoring it. He has also pretty much mastered "down" today, it's kind of funny, he lays down so fast when you say it it's like he's taking cover from an aerial attack lol.

That would have been awesome! It's too bad that we aren't closer together!

No need to be sorry I appreciate the offer to help.

His puppy biting, when he is really wound up, concerns me a bit...He will snap, and I know it's playing and not aggression, but he has actually broken my skin a couple times (scratches nothing major). I've never had a puppy get THAT into it, and even though I do what everyone says to do (say ouch, and he loses his playmate) he just doesn't get it. I just worry that this is won't go away, even though the rational part of me knows he is just a puppy, and when he is like this he is just VERY wound up. I'm not even really playing with him when he does this because he is SO wound up that I know he will start biting, and then he kind of launches at me, biting and going puppy crazy. Please tell me this is normal lol. I have visions of a large puppy continuing to do this (and that would not be good), and we are doing everything you're supposed to when a puppy bites (and it's always worked with past dogs), he just seems extra hell bent on being a bitey little terror. It's like he gets sassy when you aren't paying 100% attention when he is in this mood and that's his way of trying to get you to play.

Had to share some new pics. Bruce really hates the cold, so when he sees me get his sweater and leash, he runs (as fast as he can) and hides. Problem (for him) is that he doesn't hide well. This was his last hiding spot, sitting perfectly still and quiet behind the wall, refusing to even look at me. Too bad for him I could see him just fine lol.

Haha, it really is great! Not what I expected the first time my friends conned me into taking Oscar (I've had some craptacular dog park experiences). I think I've only shown up once and had there be strange dogs there, we didn't stay even though it looked like everyone was playing nice. I just prefer to err on the side of caution. One of the upsides to small towns

Lol! Myself, and the other tech at my old clinic used to say just this about puppies and kittens (and it's also true for human babies too). Bruce is reminding me just how much I do agree with this.

Well, I just have to say that what I see is a perfect angel in those photos. PERFECT PUPPY! You should be ashamed of talking about him like that!

Just kidding - have a one year old spitfire in my house.

Tonight is one of those nights where I have to keep reminding myself "he is just a puppy, this will get better". lol Good thing I have a bottle of wine in the fridge...he is just being such a jerk, for lack of a better word, tonight. He's lucky I love him, and he's cute. Just to remind myself that he is in fact cute (and not always Bruce the jerk dog), here's a pic from yesterday;

Shell~ Mina is only two days older than Bruce!! Aren't they somethin'???!! This is my first young puppy experience--and WOW! What an experience!! I love her with all my heart but some days I really want to wring her neck!!! She is so rambunctious...she does the same with biting...I will do the whole "Ouch!!" thing. It works off and on. I guess it depends what mood she is in! I love the way she "gallops" with her super huge feet! She sounds like a mini pony running through the house!

I'm in the process of socializing her...taking her to the nursing home my mom is in, having her meet new people as much as possible and about to enroll her in puppy class. So far so good. We go to the vet tomorrow to start posting her ears....I'm sure that will be an experience

I can't get over how truly intelligent these dogs are. Mina learns commands super fast. I don't remember my other dogs learning so quickly!! I use little pieces of cut up cooked chicken breast and cheese. It's amazing what control she will keep when she sees I have her two favorite treats! She also does the commands without the treats...I don't want her to expect food every time I give her a command.

Puppy raising is definitely not an easy task, however, I am considering doing it at least ONE more time...lol. I love Dobie's so much...I want ANOTHER!! But not yet!!! God Bless those of you who raise more than one at a time!!

Good luck with Bruce--he is adorable!!
