Tail Question

How short is too short when docking a tail?

We are in the process of bringing another doberman into our family. The one we are currently looking at is 5 weeks old, weighs 3 pounds. She has around 1/4 an inch. We inquired from the breeder and she is going to check with the vet at her appointment on Wednesday and let us know if there is any concern.

We have had 2 dobermans in the past and both tails were cut longer.

We are not going to show the dog but are concerned about spinal health.

Thanks!

The breeder SHOULD know the appropriate length to dock. Also, it should have been done a day or two after birth, iirc.

Yes, this was done already. The tail seems very short to us. We added an amendment to purchase agreement because of the short dock.

Gotcha, I misunderstood. I'm not sure what the correct joint is, but someone will chime in who does.

Who's the breeder?

Edit: oh and welcome to DT. Do you have puppy pics to share?

Generally, two whole joints are left.

Do you know if this breeder did a home job, or if a veterinarian did the docks on these puppies? Not to say all vets know breed-appropriate lengths to dock, but a reputable breeder will have researched where to take the pups for this procedure.

I would actually be much more concerned about seeing hard copies of cardio screening on the parents of the litter--that would be copies of results of recent echocardiogram, recent 24 hour holter monitoring, DCM gene testing if that has been done, thyroid and liver panels within the past twelve months, both parents, and would want to see their certified hip results in OFA database.

If this has not all been done, as well as some kind of work done with the parents, to show they are sound in mind and body--some kind of competition where it's not just THEIR word about their dogs, then that would be, sorry, a backyard breeder or mill.

I saw somewhere that you are in Central Indiana. If this is correct, please be very careful when purchasing a puppy. Indiana is full of crappy breeders that do no health testing, charge to much and haven't a clue what they are doing.

Check with Windsong Dobermans in South Bend or Cambria Dobermans in Holton. If they don't have puppies available they may be able to refer you. There are also a number of good breeders in MI, IL, KY, OH and PA if you are willing to travel a bit.

I work amongst a mixture of dobes/tail lengths and have seen both very short(1 vertebrae) to overly long(3-4 vertebrae) and never noticed anything beyond varying cosmetic appearance as far as issues go. I wouldn't be worried about the length really as much as the overall health of the pup and breeding stock as everyone else has said.

I prefer a nice compact nub personally, like a 1 vertebrae or tight 2 (no real fat pad on the end) but the classic 2 has a bonus in being more to hold up when you need to....nub dogs can be a pain to get temperatures on at work! lol

Picture one is a short nub with a fat pad on the end, it's much more short and compact than it looks
2 is an overly long tail
and three is mabels tail, i like the length and it fits her but i just adore a short fat nubbin lol

I like them shorter, myself. The first dobe I saw in person had a longer docking, and I didn't think it was very flattering on him... I do think that sometimes a tail can look better on one body type than another, however.

My girl's tail was docked too long as well, and although it would be nice for it to be the appropriate length, she was a rescue and I'm lucky it was docked at all! Its become a part of her uniqueness, and we even made sure her ears were cropped to a length that would "match" her longer tail length, lol. However, if I were paying top money to get a pup from a reputable breeder, then I might be more discriminating, even if it were just as a pet. If it doesn't bother you, then perhaps you might have a bargaining point, and can negotiate a better price... In the end, what matters most is health - after that, everything else is secondary... You'll love that pup no matter how long it's tail is!!

As someone who has seen quite a number of Dobermans come thru rescue with VERY short docks, I can bring up another potential issue--and that is, if the animal has a tail dock neuroma, well, there's really not much, if anything, left there to "fix" the dock.

OP, a neuroma is a painful and irritating condition for the pup, so I'd want to know the procedure was done properly by a vet, with a good, healed correctly outcome.

Other than that, check on those copies of all appropriate health testing on parents, prior to giving these people any money.

It's just as easy to love a responsibly-bred puppy as it is a backyard-bred puppy, and you get to reward a good citizen with your purchase money, rather than a bad one.

Are you sure the pup is only 3 lbs at 5 weeks? That seems a bit small to me. I would make sure the health of the pup is in good order. I know that some working breeders prefer a VERY short tail dock and the dogs are fine with it.

I apologize for my post, I don't know why I thought OP was concerned with the tail being too long, when it was quite the opposite! Duh!! I must not be thinking straight bc of the late hour (sorry!)

I agree with redfawnrising. When looking at tails.. The bigger concern is scarring or the tightness of skin vs length. This can become a bigger issue, break open easy and be a lifelong issue. It's important a experienced vet does the dock leaving plenty (not too much either) of skin stitched correctly.

both my girls now have short tails, and Mysti's was short as well, all done at a 2. I have seen a few dobes around here with longer tails, we have one that comes to Petco and his tail I think is done at 4 or 5, it is so long! It looks strange. Bella does have a hairless nub end on hers, and when she was a puppy she would chew on it but we stopped that right away, there was nothing like a neuroma or anything but it just never grew hair. I laugh whenever they go to the vet, because for having so little tail it sure is a strong nub! The techs always grimace when having to take temps from my girls!

I went back and read the first post you've got a bigger issue then tail length. That pup is extremely small, I'd be concerned about a underlying health issue?? Please be sure your dealing with a reputable breeder and the pups are having good health care.

I agree with the others about being concerned about size. 3 lbs is very small for a Doberman that age. I have a Vizsla puppy and her litter was very very lean and even they all weighed more than that at that age.

Yeah, 3 more weeks and you'd want her closer to 20lbs. She sounds sickly or malnourished.

Update!

We did some more research after you all brought to our attention that the puppy we were interested in was underweight . . . she was 3 pounds at 5 weeks. We had already put a deposit down on the puppy but did express our concern over the tail dock. The more research we did re: puppy weight the more red flags went up for us. We decided not to get the puppy.

We did find an adorable 10 week old dobie that we brought home last week. Her name is Grace. Photo to follow shortly.....

We have requested our deposit back from Amy and Zach Cooper of Cooper's Companions in Attica Indiana based on the obvious weight issue their puppies have. They have refused to reimburse us the deposit. We are obviously disappointed in their decision - if they claim to have bred several litters of dobermans and if this is the case they should know how much the puppies should weigh. Please chime in on subject......

I wonder what Zach's sermon message will be this Sunday at "his" CHURCH!
Merry Christmas to Zach and Amy Cooper!

oh my she is a cutie! Glad you opted for a healthier pup, I am sure it was the right decision.
