| Off to the vet... again. Last night, when I let Mariano out of his crate to go potty, his post was out of his ear, so I went to pop in back in... and it was very wet, and smelled so bad I nearly gagged.
I brought him inside and removed the post to clean his ear out... it was full of gunk and all red, and he even scratched a little bleeding cut on the outside.
So I call the vet this morning and they were incredibly rude to me. Saying I cannot just expect to get in whenever I want, that all appointments must be made a week in advanced. NO THANKS. So I am going to a new vet today.
I have been unhappy with my vet for a while. When I brought Mo in for the first time when we got him at 9 weeks, the receptionists made rude comments about his ears and how "sick" it was. And since then, they have been very mean. They do not give what I feel are good examinations eithe... so we are moving on.
Has anyone ever delt with a bad vet... or a vet who had such a huge problem with ear cropping?
This was my fmaily's vet growing up, and I am sad that things turned out this way.
I hate seeing my boy sick =[ |

| So sorry, poor baby Mo! Just like anything else, all vet's are not created equal. It's a shame they lost a client but there's no excuse for being unkind and I am glad you're moving on. |

| Definitely find another vet. Hopefully one that has a better support staff. Considering today's economy you'd think they would be bending over backwards to get you and a sick puppy in. |

| The first thing my vet said to me when I brought Earl in was "I don't even want to know which vet did this, it a malpractice suit now" to which I answered "the we're done the week before cropping was banned here, and they were done by one of the most renowned cropping gets in Canada". This was the vet that took care of my 20 year old cat til his last days. It hurt, but as it turns out he was just having a very bad day. None the less it really sucks to hear someone who should be there to support you and your puppy say things like this, and I'm glad you have other vet options. We book all of our Appointments with the other vet on staff now and Earl absolutely adores her. I hope you find someone who cares only about keeping Mo happy and healthy, just like you.

| When Mariano ate a "bad leaf", he had the runs every 15-30 mins an entire night, and started throwing up at 4am that morning. I called the E-vet, and they said to call my vet the second they opened. I did, and the vet told me they could get me in in 4 days... they would not give me an appointment. So telling my mother this, who has known this vet for 25 years, she gave them a call and a piece of her mind, and they magically found an opening lol.
The exam lasted all of 4 mins and they did not do a fecal exam or take his temp. I made them do both, and they got an attitude about it... he turned out to be ok, but that was not a risk I was going to take with a 13 week old puppy. He could have had Parvo for goodness sake.
I should have left then, but I didnt... but this morning was the last straw. I am going to a vet that another DT member is a tech at, and the manager of the office owns a dobe. I have heard they are a bit more pricey, but you get what you pay for, and I am not willing to compromise when it comes to Mariano's health. |

| Wow. I've NEVER had a problem getting a pet in to see the vet when they're sick. That's awful. Good for them for doing so well that they can afford to neglect patients in need, I guess. (heavy sarcasm)
I'd be finding a new vet immediately, too.

| the vet i used when i first got both of my cats was so awful we stopped going there after both were up to date with shots. that was 3 years before we brought home Deckard. the place we started going with him is fantastic, though, and i wouldn't trade them for anything. |

| Good for you for taking the steps necessary to ensure Mariano got good care. Our previous vet pulled this stunt on me one morning when I called because my male was literally urinating blood. "Gee..we're booked...how about next Thursday?" I won't even tell you the earful they got!
However, this opened up an opportunity to try someone new and I lucked out with a vet who was a previous Doberman breeder.
Keep us posted on how M's ear is!

| Mariano has a yeast infection in his ear, worse in the left than the right. He was an angel at the vet; they all kept commenting on how he was the best puppy they have ever seen =] (fluffed my feathers a bit!)
When we walked in, everyone who worked there came over to say hi and give him treats... commented on how beautiful he is and what a sweet boy he is... so on.
The vet not only check his ears out, he did a full exam. Asked me doberman specific questions like his vWd status, status of his parents for hips, elbows, thyroid... so on. My other vet NEVER mentioned any of these.
They also have a vet who does ears, and specializes in aftercare who offered to see Mariano for free tomorrow to see if he is ready for the molefoam and all that.
So far so good... I am glad I switched!
For the full exam, cleaning of his ears, the meds, and the exam tomorrow, it was $177... not bad in my opinion.
He is 5 months today and weighs 48.5lbs =] |

| My vet doesn't specialize in dobes (admitted that he doesn't know as much, as he's always owned border collies) but did know enough to ask about Jain's vWD status before ever drawing blood for heartworm testing (he likes to test them at intake; she was a bit young at the time, but he felt it would be prudent to do it anyway).
Following that, he referred me to another nearby vet that he said knows Dobes better to get her tested for vWD prior to her spaying.
That being said, some of his staff members did frown when they saw her ears. I just shrugged it off - they knew me and my cats fairly well already, and know I just love my pets, so that's where that ended. It's rude and for all THEY know she's always been that way (which, I DID bring her home that way!)

| You are paying for a service, I would have told the receptionist that she has the right to her opinion but it should be left unsaid because I did not ask you and I am not paying you for your opinion.
Yes, I definitely would take my business elsewhere.

| A friend highly recommended me her vet. Reading the reviews online, they had great feedback...so, why not? We had just gotten Duke, and we were looking for a vet to set our roots with, finish puppy shots and to help me with posting his ears.
Everyone at this vet office was friendly, until the vet walked into the room. Talk about over acting. She walked in, took a look at Duke and immediately backed up against the wall as if someone just shoved her against it. She started badgering me, asking who did his ears, who is my breeder, how ear cropping should be illegal because it's cruel and that she refuses to help me re-post his ears because it's a liability that she wants nothing to do with.
Good gracious that was a horrible experience! We were already there, so we continued with the rest of the exam and round of puppy shots and got out of there. Found another vet for the next round of puppy shots and are now loyal patients ever since.

I know how he got it. I was watching my 10 year old cousin, and she and Mariano were playing with a water gun... she must have accidentally gotten some in his ear... it happens. We got it VERY quick, so he should be A OK...
Thank you all for your suggestions. It looks like we may be just about done with the backer rods, and moving on to molefoam... I am praying this is the case, because Mariano HATE HATE HATES his posts. |

| When I repost Jaina, I typically clean her ears out with tea tree oil and let them dry to try to prevent infection. Of course, due to her daycare, I repost her fairly often - that, and I'm assuming they got wet AFTER having been posted. Good on you for reacting as quickly as you did, vs. "Hay DT mah dog's ears are smelly, wat do??" Those posts make me angry

| I have been around big cats most of my life (mom's career), and knew the symptoms of an ear infection from that (weird, I know, but baby tigers will get them from swimming too much lol). He was shaking his head all day, and then when I felt that moisture and THAT SMELL... I knew exactly what was wrong.
I did not want a sick baby, or a deaf baby... I was not going to wait a couple of days for it to get worse and my vet to finally fit me in. |

| Putting the brightest face on the response from the office staff of your original vet. It may be just that — a staff response that the vet(s) would be horrified to find out about. It might be worth shooting them an e-mail to explain why they have lost a client.
We've been with the same vet for a donkey's years, and I know that they trust me not to be alarmist. If I say I'm concerned, they move heaven and earth to see my dog asap. Urgent cases can, of course, cause delays in regular appointments, but I'm sure most people understand, though there will always be some who complain. Our vet's staff usually go out of their way to explain why they're running behind, and this usually cools out the complainers. |

| The doctor I liked there retired earlier this year, and I am not too happy with her replacement... I was considering leaving before, but the whole your puppy is throwing up and not getting out of bed? Oh, we can see you in a few days thing was kind of the last straw.
The place I went today has a couple dobe owners on staff, and I like the fact that the DR. asked several dobe health related questions without me bringing them up. |

Thank you all for your suggestions. It looks like we may be just about done with the backer rods, and moving on to molefoam... I am praying this is the case, because Mariano HATE HATE HATES his posts. | I have posted both ways. My last boy Strider ....I only did molefoam. It is more comfortable for them....but in my opinion won't give you as straight a stand. Though it probably would have if I had made a bridge.
The traditional way .....which I did with my new boy Rudy.....works well....
But it is harder and a tad more work. But seriously, the mole foam is also work...I glued and you still need to put in into the base of the ear like the regular posts.... Perhaps not as far..... but similar.
PM me if you need any help with the mole foam. No Tape Ear Standing Method - mole foam
Here are Strider's ears. Done with the MoleFoam method.
Here are Rudy's with traditional posting.
He's around 4/5 months here
