| | Alpha | Introducing a New PUP Since there are allot of us in the midst of deciding on which breeder, but know we are getting a pup, in the very near future and there are also allot of doberman talk people closer to their date and counting down the days. I thought if the families who have more than one dog would give their input on introducing a new pup to the family, and answer any specific questions any of us at doberman talk might have along the way. The do's and dont's, things you learned the hard way and wouldn't do again or some tips that you wish you knew and did in the beginning.
Maybe we could carry it along to help all of us second dog owners to be. Or for some who have had two but there are specifics with the new combination to be that they didn't ever have. Such as I do. My question is on introducing a pup to a female who is high energy and not always that appreciative of other dogs. She likes males best, so yes we are getting a male. It will not be a dobe, and we are picking this time a low key pet. Has anyone been in this situation and the bitch was fine, or did it take a period of training an acceptance of the other dog being in the home. What suggestions do any of you might have to make this a smoother journey, for ALL, human and dogs.
Just to add Tink is five yearsold, and will be five and a half if all goes well when pup arrives.

| Well it depend I guess on so much factors, the characters of the dogs etc. I had once a female lyndsey and she was the most diffecult dog I ever had. New dogs I had to bring careful it doesn't matter if it was a male or female she wants to "kill" them all
With our males we never had problems, they accept each other, we learn them the way we want it, but for everyone it is different, I am lucky my husband is a dogperson, and a good trainer as well so I think for people who are not knowledge or experienced, the best they can do is to get some advice from a good breeder where they buy there new addition, I said in a thread before he is the one who know the puppies and can see what is the best choice,

| Rough may just be your boys' middle name. I have never had a problem introducing a pup into the fold. I think I have always introduced them to grown dogs, never wanted two pups to deal with.
I did let Parker play with a tiny baby schnauzer and he was gentle with him much to my suprise. I think Parker was about 3 or 4 months old. I don't know about now at 6 months but I would think it would be the same. |

| We have an 11 year old girl (retriever mix) who had been an only dog all of her life. She was never too keen on strange dogs, so we were very nervous to add a puppy. We constantly supervised them but she really accepted the puppy very quickly. She wasn't always in the mood to be annoyed but she made sure she corrected the puppy when necessary! Ultimately, I believe the younger dog revitalized her.
Best of luck with your new puppy!

| Honestly I'm not much help as I've never done anything special when introducing a new dog. They come in the house, everybody greets one another, and we live happily ever after. I've never had an issue with any dog moving in here. I am also extremely picky about the temperaments of the dogs I choose to live with however.

| | Alpha | I've pretty much done the same as Julie. It's also not uncommon for me to be taking care of other animals (for friends, family members, or the occas. foster), so at my house all my animals usually just kind of look at me like "Mom, are we keeping this one?"
I agree w/ lyngr - my younger dogs (7yr and 1 yr) have kept my old girl (14 1/2 yr) going. |

DT was giving me fits yesterday.
I do very much agree on the younger dog revitalizing an older dog. Worked for my 12 1/2 yr older lady. |
