| Big Scare Last night. Ruger got a hold of my wifes small sock. I was sitting on the couch and saw him run up the stairs he looked guilty so I watched him. He stops at the landing sits down. I see he is chewing on something. He spits out a sock I get up to go get the sock and he just inhales it. I run up open his mouth sock is gone. He is breathing ok, just starts acting a bit nervous, but that might be cuz me and the wife were very nervous. Well 2 tea spoons of Hydrogen Peroxide and 40 minutes later, the sock came out same way it went in. He is a tough little guy we kept him in the bath tub the whole 40 min. And he fought not to puke so hard. He kept getting a gag reflex but it seems like he was able to suppress it. What really put him over, I started rubbing his tummy hard and up came the sock. He is OK now. But those 40 min took forever. The wife was very upset cuz she prolly dropped the sock when she was doing laundry.
Question: If I didn't see him sallow the sock, will it have came out the other end or he would have had to get it surgically removed?
EDITED: I wrote: two table spoons, we used two tea spoons.

| Yeah he recently took a big liking in socks. So we got a new bin dedicated to socks. Otherwise so far the only other thing he has tried to eat is letters, newspapers, any paper.

| BE VERY CAREFUL. There are owners on here who have lost dogs due to socks. Just this week Lucan, Lucagirl's puppy had one removed surgically thankfully he is doing great but it was....very scary and expensive.
I'm glad he is ok!

| My baby eats everything he can. I would like to know the answer to this question myself. Quentin will hunt for socks. He part of a rug I had on the porch for them to chew their bones on. A few days later I had to get toliet paper and pull the stool that had threads in it out of him. It was hanging out and would not break off. He acted as if it may have hurt a little but was fine afterwards. He is lucky it did not twist in his bowel and cause an obstruction. So is the proxide a solution if they eat something bad? Do you just use regular over the counter peroxide? When my Collie (years ago, he has passed now), had ACL surgery somehow they got the pain pills off a pretty high table and ate them. I did not know which dog did it so I had to take 2 to the emergency clinic and they gave them peroxide. I never thought it could be done at home. Has anyone else ever done this them selves and did it work oK.
Thanks, Sheila |

| Hi Sheila,
Yes I used over the counter peroxide. CVS Brand to be exact. I have had previous dogs swallow things and a vet walked me through the phone to do it. So this is my second time doing it. It is usually done when you see them or you know that they swallowed something that could cause a problem. I am sure there is time period you have to give it to them, not sure what it is. Prolly the time it takes to digest.

| my Cody ate 3 socks as a 4 month old puppy. he barfed one up, poo-ed one out and we hadto surgically remove the third. not to be too disgusting, but if your boy likes sock, I am sure he will like underwear too, so you all should probably mind your knickers as well. I think these guys go for the articles of clothing that smell most like us.

| Codysmom,
How bad was the surgery? How fast did he recover? Did it leave any perm problems? How did you find out that the sock was in there, was he not eating, not pooping, maybe pooping blood?
Thanks

| | Big Dog | Well this brings back memories. My little girl now 9 months old has eatten 6 socks. She pooped out all 5 and threw 1 up. We got very lucky. It was one a day and I started getting very worried not knowing how many she got into. The vet said just to watch her and make sure she still has an appeitite and gos to the bathroom. After that we made sure all articles of clothing were out of reach. She did scare us once more and I pulled a sock from the back of her throat. Just be very careful these dogs are too smart for there own good, lol. |
