Fly or Drive Back With New Puppy

Hi,

I'm trying to make plans to pick up the new puppy. I won't send another puppy via cargo because Wheeler was absolutely shaking like a leaf when I picked him up. Delta allows me to bring a puppy into the cabin. I tried to purchase an extra seat for the puppy and his carrier but Delta will not do that. Nor will they allow me to take him out of his carrier during the flight. They said I can't even hold the carrier once the plane is in the air.

Delta's restrictions for the carrier is 18L x 12W x 12H. The puppy will be 9 weeks old with a cup. Is this size carrier way too small?

Delta's weight restriction for any animal in the cabin is 18 lbs. I have no idea how much this puppy will weight. Do you folks have a best guesstimate as to what range his weight will be?

I don't want to drive back but will if this size carrier is just too small.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks.

KC

Lots of doberman puppies are flown in the cabin at 8-9 weeks, so it's definitely an option to consider. I'd probably take the cup off, you can use skin bond to glue the ears, folding them flat over the top of his head...many breeders do that rather than use the cups anyway, and it would give a puppy more head room in the sherpa bag or whatever you use to travel with him.

I nearly went that route but was just too scared the carrier would be too small or Parker would weigh too much and I would be stuck at the airport with no way to get home so I just drove the 12 1/2 hrs both ways. I was going to have to use Northwest and I don't think their carriers were that big. Parker was around 17/18 lbs at 9 weeks and 3/4 days old when I picked him up.
A lot of people fly with pup tho.

I have done both, sent dogs as cargo and as carry on.

I would be concerned that if your pup is just over the limit, or won't fit into the crate, you will be stuck.

When we went to get our girl (11 weeks), and we tried to get her to go into the travel crate that based on weight would be just right, there was no way in hell she was going in there (willful at the start). Lucky for us it was a 20-minute drive, with her shrieking all the way.... ahhh memories!

Good luck with the new pup.
