Why doesn't someone just suggest to that kid that he go online and look up the AKC and FCI standards and see what colors/markings Dobermans are? Let him see it in writing for himself.

Stupid vet. How hard is it to look this stuff up, especially after someone has alerted you that you are wrong. Go check it out, for crying out loud.

Reminds me of one of my favorite sayings:

"The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge." --Stephen Hawking

That pretty much sizes that vet up, doesn't it?

Good info. There was a thread on here (a long time ago) about defining the markings in context of actual color shade... rust vs straw vs tan, etc. I really like the deep mahogany-esque colored rust, esp on a black dog. I have fawns, so their rust is light, but a beautiful contrast. On their faces, it looks like they are wearing blush.

I don't think the kids biggest problem is a dearth of terminology knowledge. It's general ignorance that spans all categories.

The Sire's name is Rawlings Black Panzer, and the Dam's name is Rawlings Andrea Belle. I know it's kind of late...But Panzer's my boy, and Andi was my 17th birthday present. I own Rawlings Alexandra from the same litter that this "rare chocolate" is from...his sister ... littermate.

I think you should call them and ask if they are light or dark chocolate? In Europe Reds are called Brown.

I get the "wow a choc. Doberman" comments all the time about Malia. Truth be told, she is far more brown than most reds I have spent time around. Other than the lack of knowledge in calling her chocolate, it no longer really bothers me.
The rust vs. tan thing has always puzzled me. On Magnums pedigree many of his family tree are listed as Blk/Tan and many as Blk/Rust. On my two dogs (will try to get a pic) if you look at them side by side, one is a light (tan) rust, the other a dark rust.
Just my $.02

Jaina's actually registered at her daycare as a chocolate Doberman. I didn't bother to correct them - though the person who registered her admitted that she DOES know that it's red and not chocolate - it's just the way that their system is set up. It apparently doesn't differentiate breed colors.

That said, I get compliments, too, about how dark she is. I can see why her breeder gave her the call name of Carmella - she's as dark as milk chocolate (and just as sweet!)

Roses are grey,
Violets are grey,
Everything is grey,
Because Jaina's a dog.

If I had bred the dog, I would have stated so. No, I did not. I don't even live in Utah and have not for a long time. I was simply stating that I know the Dam and Sire, as they were my pets growing up. Hope that answers your question!

Hi everyone, I know these posts are a bit old, but just wanted to read them. I saw in a post where someone said that the dog's brain would swell and then would turn on it's owner.. well I was told that too. When I decided to get a doberman (my first) 8 yrs ago.. and I asked a couple of breeders that question.. well thank God no one laughed at me but of course they said no.. I was told, however, that you want a dobes head to be wide and flat as possible? Perhaps that is just the outline for the wedge shape it is suppose to have (if you understand what I mean) ? and as for the color, my dog is red but she is like a deep mahogany color. As for the rust vs tan I was told red/rust and black/tan. But this is my 1st doberman so I am not trying to come off like I know it all lol. just what I have been told and believe me, I have asked alot of questions over the yrs and am still learning so pls fill me in anytime .. oh and I will try to get pics of her when I have time, been working alot and am dog sitting next weekend . I do want you to see her, she is pretty, but then what dobe isn't.
