Now before everyone goes coo coo, I am only asking so I can give reliable prices and information to people who wish to breed their pets.(I am pretty well aware of some things, but need personal experiences and prices) I don't check on here as much as I used to, but hope to see things that can and will go wrong with any breeding. Not just for Dobies, mixed breeds of any kind.
Please try and keep prices close to what you have actualy done. Not sure if this would be better in Breeding section or here...
Please keep this convo kind. This can be anyones personal experience raising a litter(any breed), breeding-whelping and the costs involved.
Note, both are out of date and probably underestimate the cost. They should make it clear that breeding puppies properly is not a money making proposition.
Just checked the spreadsheet on my most recent litter. Total expenses $8391. That does not include all the ear aftercare (add another $150.00 in supplies).
We had no major medical issues and NO c-section.
It also didn't take into account I already have all the supplies....whelping box etc. Add another $500.00 plus if you don't.
Unfortunately most people will never take into account how much it cost to raise a litter. I've tried to explain this to one of my daughter's friend's mother. She wants to breed her dachshunds, both of which she got for free from friends. The woman doesn't have a pot to pee in, but is willing to risk it because she has a friend that does shots and worming, (she knows Jubes story), and used to work at a barn so she knows how to help them in the birthing process. So, what can go wrong? Plus, she has no problem giving them to the pound if they become too much because she was willing to give a "loved pet" to the pound after he was just too big for the condo. Most people think it is rediculous what some breeders spend on their litters. Shows are just for "fancy dogs", and seriously, plenty of pets are healthy without all the unnecessary health testing.
For the most part, you are not going to change anybody's mind on this matter by using the price to deter them, because there are always ways they can cut that back. For that matter, it could be free. Baring any emergency, you already have a male and a female, they breed for free, have the babies, and eat the same old crap you feed the other dogs, just less of it because they are small and you can make it stretch by feeding leftover spaghetti.
LOL, This isn't for me...& I haven't posted in months...Im pretty aware of some costs but haven't bred a litter. This is more for people who come to me crying about how they want to breed, are thinking about breeding or may have had a oopsie litter. My friend in particular is the last one. Im trying to give her some info and hopfully scare her into spaying her mixed breed pet.
The cost is not just in dollars, either. The litter we just whelped and raised entailed 24/7 supervision by three people taking turns for eight weeks, plus the more personal attention of early neurological stimulation, seven steps to a super puppy (more like 20) weighing, nail trimming, cleaning up, washing machine going several times daily, sleep deprivation, emotional stress...adding up to wonderful puppies, but way more than most people would be willing to commit to. Not something to do without a very very good reason.
My breeder just spent $5000 at the vet this week alone on cropping, tail fixes, shots ect.. that's just the one vet visit, never mind all the other stuff that came before that.
Your typical neighborhood dog breeder won't think those costs apply to him. He'll be certain that everything will go as nature planned and the total cost of the litter will be the all purpose wormer purchased at Walmart, one set of vaccines and the cost of the craigslist ad. He sees dollar signs. And if he is stuck with a puppy or two he just dumps them at the local shelter.
THIS! I am required by contract to give the "right of first refusal" to my breeder if I was to sell, donate, or dump my beautiful Chloe(which is not going to happen)....what ever people do when they decide that the dog/puppy is a inconvenience.... But my point is that a responsible breeder will take a dog back so it does not end up in a bad home. Breeding is a huge responsibility when done correctly.
A lot! My recent litter of 8 cost me around $8000 + 24/7 care and free labor. I already had most of the supplies & it was a normal delivery for the most part. Obviously, Dobermans are expensive to breed and raise correctly - however, some costs are the same no matter what. The vet that has to do a c-section, examine and worm 8 puppies charges the same for well bred Doberman puppies as they do for poorly bred anything.
Of course, I've found that most people who breed their pet do so with no real knowledge or vet care and normally lose puppies - I know one family that bred their Lab and lost the whole litter at around 6 weeks. I cringe when I hear the stories... and they all think I am nuts for doing all that I do.
The person I am trying to deter may have had a accidental breeding to her 9month old pit/husky mixed breed. So even if she isn't pregnant Im hoping some of these prices of proper care will scare her into spaying her dog.
I would never undertake breeding unless I had the money to do it right.
Well I sent her tons of info. And did my own research and included that too. Hopefully it works and all that money scares her into spaying her pet. :nicejob::thanx:
A lot of breeds don't do ear crops and that is a large part of the expense in Dobermans if you want to do it right. Unfortunatley for the possible puppies above they will be dumped through craigslist to anyone who has the money or manybe even free which means they are even more likely to go to people who should not even own a guppy!!!
