| | Lil Pup | Floppy ear question Hi everyone im new here and this is my first post. I have a 9 week old doberman puppy I plan to take and get cropped on monday. Yesterday I noticed one of his ears was creased differently than the other. The day before they were both the same :/ On ear is "normal" but the one im concerned about has a dip like crease that makes the ear go back instead of flat and forward like the other. I just got off the phone with numerous vets who have never heard of an unnatural crease and they couldnt tell me if this would effect the cropping. I know that ear cropping is garunteed at all but will this crease in his ear lessen his chances of standing? Im very concerned. Im assuming he slept on it for several hours causing it to do that. If anyone has any input to me at rest until monday that would be great! ( I live 2 hours from any vet that does the procedure so thats 4 hours to take him to one just to get an answer)
Thanks. |

| I'll bet his ears will stand up just fine.
If a few hours of creasing a Dobie's ears produced results that lasted forever, we wouldn't be posting their ears for months! |

| I can't believe none of the vets told you it was okay. Doberman puppies and other long eared breeds go thru all kinds of ear wonkiness. He should do fine. |

| What does the breeder think?

| | Alpha | Could you post a pic of it? I have had issue with lestats ears and am curious as to whether this is a sign of over correcting. According to a specialist ear cropping dogs that look almost like they are trying to stand uncropped ears over compensate once cropped and the weight of the ear is lessened. Some dogs have very strong muscles there apparently and when the weight is gone they tend to pull them up so much that they want to go over the head. I also have been told that the age they are cropped and posted has a big effect on whether the ear is flat or nicely rounded in the front. Also it seems that dogs with naturally thick ear leather are tougher to effect a change on. |

| | Lil Pup | I did talk to the breeder and she said they could still be cropped but she doesnt advise getting a long crop. She also said I could return the puppy. I wanted a pet crop anyways so I think ill take my chances. As far as pics, once I get off campus and head home ill put some up. |

| Be careful when you ask for a pet crop. You don't want them cut like a pit bulls, too short and it takes away from the dog. |

You may want to bring some along with you of what you have in mind. Find a few pictures of crop styles you like, copy, and print them out to show your vet.
Good luck Monday and welcome to DT. Oh, you ought to also post a new member intro thread. |
