NO PET STORES!!!!! Do not ever buy any kind of dog from a pet store, please! If you have never owned a doberman before then you really have to research the breed alot before deciding to get one. There is alot of useful info on this forum along with other sites on the internet. If and when you decide you are ready for the dog, you need to find a reputable breeder of dobermans in your area. You need to go their and see the dogs yourself, you do not want to buy your first dog over the internet from a breeder you don't know. Dobermans are alot of work and alot of responsibility!! Make sure you learn as much as you can before you ever buy a pup. If you have questions Please Ask!!! Thats what the experienced owners are here for.

hey

First off, Please do some research into the breed before you buy one. You want to look into finding an experienced, knowledgable breeder from which to buy your dobes. Dobermans are a breed that are plagued with health problems and lovers of the breed ( and the majority of people on this board) are trying their hardest to improve the breed by supporting responsible breeding ONLY ( ie, no pet stores, no backyard breeders, no internet...) As for average cost, that is hard to say but for a quality pup expect to be spending quite a bit. Please remember that you will probably pay the same amount for a pup from a responsible breeder as you will for a pup from a backyard breeder and you will get a much healthier happier puppy!

As for finding one before christmas, that is a rather unrealistic goal since most good breeders have waiting lists on pups or atleast require more than 4 weeks notice.

For what a pup should come with, there is a HUGE list. They should come with their first set of shots, a pedigree and should be registered ( CKC, KC, AKC depending on where you are from) unless you are willing to rescue! Which is an awesome alternative. You should be able to meet the parents, look at the grandparents and see proof of health testing from all of the above ( tests for vwd, involved in a cardio program, hips, eyes, elbows certified etc).

I did my best but I'm SURE that the experts will fill you in! Goodluck! Dobes are the best.

To add to this, I really wouldn't set any kind of a deadline, like you want to buy one before Christmas. Even after you find a reputable breeder, you'll frequently discover they have waiting lists for their puppies. They also don't have puppies available all the time..they might only breed a litter once a year or so (sometimes longer).

A well bred puppy from titled, health tested parents usually runs around $1500. If someone is selling them for less, they almost certainly have cut some major corners, and that can manifest itself in temperament problems and/or health problems later on down the line.

If you do find one your interested in please post and ask about the breeder.

If you want one thats quickly rescue may be your best bet, also you could avoid the puppy stage and get one already housebroken. If you work or are gone during the day it is hard to raise a puppy and harder to housebreak one. Dobes are more time intense than most breeds.

A quick note: by CKC here we mean CANADIAN Kennel Club. There are several "so-called" registries that count on people not knowing the difference - they were developed to get around AKC (AMERICAN Kennel Club's limited registration), and so puppy mills/byb's could sell "registered" puppies. These registries include CONTINENTAL Kennel Club (it's no coincidence they use the CKC abbrev.!), American Canine Association (ACA), American Pet Registry, Inc (APRI), etc. I would stay far away from anyone boasting/selling dogs registered w/ these registries - they are a joke and they are not the same as the AKC.

If you have any questions about breeders or registries or health testing, you can seach on here - there's a ton of info or start a new thread w/ your question if you can't find the answer.

Sometimes reputable breeders will have puppies available when you call for whatever reason or they may have young adults available as well (sometimes buyer has backed out, etc.). It certainly doesn't hurt to contact them. I actually "sort of" started looking a couple years ago, and a breeder I was seriously considering actually had pups available at that time, but I was not ready yet. Then a year ago, thinking I it might take up to a year to find my show pup (that I'd have to be on a waiting list), I started looking again. I actually wasn't planning to get a pup then (as I was going to wait until after my older dobe was gone), but there was a red show prospect bitch available. The pup was getting cropped that weekend. I had to think long and hard about this, because I wasn't really planning on getting a pup for at least 6 mos. But, I really liked the pedigree of this pup, this was to be the bitch's last litter and the pup was really nice..... so I ended up getting her a week later. So again, you never know!

You can also search on www.offa.org to verify some of the health testing and look at vertical pedigrees, and search www.dobequest.org - has info on dogs, pedigrees, health issues (it's no where near complete, but is a good starting point). Also a ton of info on www.dpca.org (national breed club)

Good luck in your search!

At the clinic I used to work at, we had 2 pet stores that were very close, so ended up seeing a fair number of pet store puppies. Most of the people had no idea that there was any difference in registries, that the puppies come from puppy brokers who in turn get them from puppy mills and bybs, that the weren't breeding quality, or that they had just paid a large sum of money for a mutt (not a "designer dog") whose parents were just thrown together with no thought as to pedigree, health, etc.

***People need to understand that if they buy puppies from pet stores or buy goods from pet stores that sell puppies (including online puppy brokers), THEY are the ones supporting the puppy mills and puppy brokers.

In most cases, you can't meet both parents. Responsible breeders are looking high and low, far and wide, for the best match for their female, and he's not always going to be living nearby. In fact, if their sires are always living nearby, perhaps that's a red flag that they don't get out much and aren't really looking very far.

For instance, I live in Ontario. I've bred to males in Michigan, Massachusetts, Illinois, Ohio, etc. I'm not limiting myself to the dogs that live in my area, and the same is true for many responsible breeders. Additionally, there is a lot of breeding going on to the sperm from dogs at greater distances away and/or from dogs of the past that aren't even alive anymore.

Not being able to meet the sire isn't a bad thing necessarily.

And if a breeder has travelled to that right male at some distance away, then it's pretty likely that someone isn't going to be able to easily meet that set of grandparents. Sure, they can see them in pictures or videos in all likelihood but meeting them up close and personal may be an impossibility.

On one hand, it's a small world these days. We can breed to dogs anywhere. We're also buying dogs from everywhere. For instance, one of my dogs - his mother lived in Louisiana and his sired lived in California. The buyers of his puppies sure weren't going to be able to see them personally.

My Rush is a good example. His sire had been dead for about 10 years at the time his litter was conceived...

While there are times good breeders might use their own stud dogs, it's far more often a red flag to me if the sire is on the premises. Especially if the stud dog is bred to EVERY bitch the breeder might have.
