In order for the doberman ears to stand up, the ears are cropped and then taped for a couple of months. That "teaches" the ears to stay upwards. There are also some people who love the natural look (ears downwards) and therefore don't have the ears cropped or taped.

Well...the ears have to be cropped by a professional that knows what they're doing and has the drugs, equipment, etc. to do it safely.

The aftercare, where the ears are posted to train them to stand, isn't that difficult. Most people can be taught how to do it themselves pretty easily. Or if you live near the breeder, they'll do it for you.

A vet needs to perform the ear crop, normally when the puppy is around 9ish weeks old. It's a surgery involving cutting away some of the ear flap and then suturing the cut edges. After the edges are healed and the sutures removed then you the owner start the "posting" process of basically splinting the ears in an upright position until the cartilage hardens and they stay that way. Ear posting is normally done continuously until the puppy is done teething (5-6 months) but sometimes is takes less or more time. You need to remove the tape/posts and re-do them a couple of times a week until they are done.
