| My newest Dobie is now 8 months old. We did not crop or tape his ears. He is not a show dog, he is our dog and I love him the way he is. I laugh when he runs to me with both ears flopped back, looks like is he is keeping them back with barrettes. This the natural state of the dog and he is beautiful. |

There seems to be an attitude on this board that everyone knows better than the vet because "vets don't learn this in vet school, so the breeders know more about it". My vet has been doing this for 30 years. He knows more about the dog's anatomy, blood flow, etc....he knows more about the health of a doberman than a group of breed enthusiasts on a web board. And yes, he does know more about cropping, too. MUCH MORE. Sorry, but that needed to be said.
If you are worried about whether or not you can crop your dobie at 12, 13, 14 weeks, and you feel you MUST look it up on the internet, Google "Successful cropping 12 weeks", or "why vet says it's better to wait until 12 weeks to crop", etc. You'll get a slew of results saying why it's ok.
But better yet: ASK YOUR VET. Step away from the computer and ask a real life veterinarian who crops about cropping. He/she will know more about it than anyone here, I promise.
By the way, my dog was cropped at 11 weeks and not posted until 12 weeks, after the stitches were removed. After 3 days her ears were almost standing completely on their own. They are doing fantastic. |
At ease with your ill-informed tangent. Your vet must be good in bed, I can't think of any other logical reason as to why you are adamantly defending a professional that thinks all ears are created equal. |

| Burns, I'm in vet tech school and one of my teachers said that the best time to crop is between 16-23 weeks. She also said its so painful and traumatic for puppies to go through and it's just horrible. This same teacher also talked about how cool warlock dobermans are.
This is the terrible information they are teaching us in vet tech school. Luckily I know better, but the general population of the student body...just, wow... |

| My pup was cropped at 7 weeks. The cutoff is 12 weeks. If they won't crop until after, they probably won't do a good crop job anyways. |

I'm a licensed tech and they never taught us anything in school about cropping. What's even scarier is when people are taught the completely wrong thing. It's no wonder the public is so misinformed

Ooh, I just now noticed that when you scroll over the little green lights under your information, it mentions stuff like "has a reputation beyond repute" or " has much to be proud of", and stuff like that.

| Just click the rep button in someone's mini profile next to their post, and it'll ask you to approve or disapprove. If you choose disapprove, you have to put in a reason. That's it

On the vet tech thing--some of the worst pet owners I've ever known were techs. For that matter, I've known some pretty awful pet owners who were vets. We've even seen some craptastic breeders come on this forum, who were vets, and trying to use that to excuse their BYB practices.
Just goes to show--someone's role, profession, or position of authority does not always equal good judgement and good character.

I just tried to experimentally click and give you positive rep and the message that comes up is "You have given too much reputation in the past 24 hours, please try again later," or something very similar. (End of the day, short term memory is fried.)
That would be the finger smacking I recall from the other couple times I've ever tried to give either positive or negative.

How long do I have to go with no "thanks" to give negative rep, and how explicit can I be with the reasons.????

Just goes to show--someone's role, profession, or position of authority does not always equal good judgement and good character. | So true! We get some doozy clients who ask some really basic medical questions, and make some really bad medical decisions, who are doctors and nurses. It really makes me want to ask them where they are practicing so I don't ever go there for care lol

| My pup was cropped at 10 weeks. My vet said under no circumstances would he ever do a crop past 12 weeks of age. That the likelyhood of them standing would be less.
