| Nubis the tracking dog Okay its like a switch went off.
During our walks he would do a quick sniff, now he goes in hound mode and his nose is stuck to the ground but he will keep pace. My other male, never did it, so not sure if it's a female scent thing cuz its mostly on sidewalks, so I thought his sniffing out other dogs. My female would sniff a little like that too.
I guess I am going to have read up on tracking cuz he almost looks like a hound, its kinda funny seeing him plowing snow.
Years ago my buddy's dobe had all kinds of titles, and was amazing at tracking, it was cool, hiding stuff in the snow and challenging him.

| Seems he wants to work that nose. Kyrah loves finding things that I hide from her. One thing to keep in mind is if you want to do something in the future with him focusing on you instead of sniffing. You might not want it to become to much of a habit. Just a thought.

| I think its a winter thing, because moisture makes scent much more potent. I took chase out for a walk tonight, about 4 inches of fresh snow was on the ground. For half an hour his nose was on the ground

No, I don't let him continue as it defeats the walk. Grant it a couple of times, he was doing it and I didn't even realize it, until I looked down in a proud moment hahaha. Sneeky bugger....

True. But we only got dump on with snow yesterday,.today the plow effect was funny. He started last week. I'm really starting to think, he is smelling his own tracks, cuz one of those days I found a new route and he didn't do it, during that portion.
I will have to try getting him to find things, cud be a good game in the yard.

| When I formally train in OB, doing the on or off leash, I never / ever allow the nose to the sidewalk...or its an immediate correction.
The result is a dog that stays focused on me.
Now on leisure city walks or wood lot outings...I allow sniffing, to her hearts content...and she can just be a dog.
She still will listen to me if I speak up, maybe because of the earlier work / when sniffing was tabo, and she understood this.
I laugh at Amy, she is a big sniffer roaming in our yard...finding the perfect potty break spot.
Luckly for us, she never steps on any old poo...lol...even in the dark of night...the nose has its benefits, and the dog stays clean paws...entering the house.

| Thanks
When he initially did it, I thought he needed a potty break as he also has to find the perfect #2 spot. I swear he has a nose attached to each paw, as he has only had close calls, stepping in it, lol.

| Odin has a really good sniffer lol, the power went out a few days ago and to kill the time I was taking treats and hiding them through out the house and having Odin find them.
I am looking into the new and upcoming sport of nose work for Odin since he uses he nose way more than any of my other dogs ever have. When we are on walks I start out not letting him sniff and make him concentrate on heel and on me. About half way through of the walk when we are on our way back home and he has done good on the leash I reward him with a "go" command that allows him to go to the end of his leash and smell to his heart desires but once he reaches the end of the leash he has to move because I wont sit there and let him take his jolly ol time taking forever to investigate and area lol.
