| Puppy loose stool Hello,
Rudy's stool is still a little loose. It's ok if I put in pumpkin, but is there anything better? He's eating Solid Gold Wolf Cub Large Breed Puppy food. I have some Canidea I mixed in. Two weeks ago he was on Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy food. He didn't have a problem on that food. I have heard of adding brown rice? Somewhere in the search on here I saw something called Fasttrack? May I ask for opinions, and thank you.

| What I have found with Isabelle & her continuing tummy trouble is that boiled chicken & rice (white or brown) in the food chopper is the best. I feed this for a few day and then slowing add dog food back in. I have also boiled steak - the cubed kind for stew or the pre-sliced kind for fajitas. The key is the food processor. If it isn't all chopped up together she will only eat the meat & won't get the stopping up benefits of the white rice. Chicken is also easily digestable - so I have been told. With the boiled meat there isn't any grease. Also a bit of canned pumpkin can help. It is in the baking section at the grocery store. I think I use about a tablespoon of the pumpkin.

| Why did you take him off the Eukanuba? Try withholding his food for a day and then slowly introduce him back to the Eukanuba. Kaopectate, Slippery Elm Bark, and Fowlers Strawberry extract may help with the loose stools. But I would not try a whole wack of differrent things yet. Give him a day or so and see if his stools return to normal on their own. Talk to your Vet as well.

| I took him off of Eukanuba becase I was told on here that corn isn't good for the dogs and Solid Gold, Canidea etc... are better dog foods.

Scoob (Jim) | They're MUCH better foods. You might try backing off on how much you're feeding of the new kibble-overfeeding can cause loose stools. Or it may be that whatever new kibble you're giving him doesn't agree with him..but I sure wouldn't go back to Yukanuba in that case..I'd try another one of the super premium kibbles.

| I may try Innova, but I will give Solid Gold and Canidea more time, just would like to get those stools more firm.

| Sometimes the additional fat in the diet is poorly absorbed for a while. Most of the 'premium' foods have increased fat and protein, with decreased carbohydrates, as compared to other brands. It can take a while for the intestinal tract to readjust. I really like the Innova products, but I'm willing to bet that changing brands won't entirely solve the problem - still high protein/fat foods. You can either mix in a little Euk and taper it out, this time more gradually (basically what you did to make the original switch, just over a longer period of time), or you can just tough it out, and the stools will probably firm up in a few weeks. Adding brown rice, as mentioned before will serve the same purpose as adding Euk - cutting the fat, adding some fiber.

Scoob (Jim) | May want to try a digestive enzyme supplement (Prozyme), or add in some plain yogurt with his kibble a few times a week. I gotta agree with posters on here, Eukanuba is garbage. |

| Java gets the same Rx as Jenny advised: boiled chicken and brown (or white) rice (the rice absorbs extra liquid). I also add a Tbsp of plain yogurt during at least one meal. Java LOVES pumpkin, sweet potatoes, so adding these to help firm up stool is considered a treat. I'm sure the fiber in the pumpkin doesn't hurt and it's not the type of roughage that is hard on the intestines. |

| I would go with Murreydobes advice on this and try backing off on the amount of food you are feeding him. Premium kibbles such as these are often higher in caloric content and richer than the lesser qulaity foods and as such your puppy needs much less quantity for the same nutritional value. It is relatively common for a puppy to get loose stools when changing to premium kibbles because they are getting an amount which is more than they actually need.
