| Help With My Puppy!! I just recently got a new doberman puppy yesterday, it is a male and just turning 9 weeks this friday. The seems scared of me but sometimes isnt. I bought home a bunch of toys like a Kong for example but he doesnt play with any of it, he likes chewing on my carpet. He never seems playful. I understand puppies normally sleep 19 hours a day average but they play a lot too. He doesnt run at all, he just lays there or stares at me. I have to carry him outside because he refuses to follow me anywhere. When i put a leash on him even inside he doesnt want to go anywhere. If i pull on th leash he fights back by sitting on just struggles with me and i have to drag him literally on a leash and i do not want to do that. When i sit indian style near him he crawls on my lap and curls up. My puppy seems a little chubby in the belly too. I see and feel his ribs but he looks like he is pregnent in the stomach. I asked to breeder and she said its only baby fat, but when i look at pictures of other puppy dobermans they dont go the fat tummy my puppy does. He is just so lazy and never does anything at all and doesnt seem playful? PLEASE HELP |

A pot bellied appearance often is an indication of worms-if possible, take a stool sample with you when you take him in for his vet check.
Could be he hasn't been socialized very well up to this point, and due to that is overwhelmed by new people, a new environment, etc.

| | Alpha | Puppies as young as yours need to be taught how to walk on a leash. You will need to carry him until he learns this. Don't drag him or he will learn to hate the leash. First things first though, he need to get use to his brand new home. And may be sick due to having worms which can cause tummy aches. Have him see the vet. After he gets feeling better, he will become more playful. Take it Day by Day, and don't rush things.

| Don't expect too much too soon. As mentioned in the other reply, take him to the vet for an inspection, take a stool sample with you. As for his leash, put on his leash and let him drag it around for awhile (while you supervise) -- soon he'll accept it fine. He will need time to get used to you and a new environment. He misses his littermates and mother. He will accept you and your home in time. Take him out every hour to poop/pee. When he gets older, say 5-6 months, he will start to become housetrained.

| Murreydobe is right about everything. He sounds like he is probably wormy and like he hasn't been socilaized at all. If he is not playful at all he may not feel good because of the worms. He needs a vet check ASAP. Hookworms are very dangerous and can kill your puppy.
I'm sure he will come out it soon enough when he feels better and gets used to you. If not you may have some temperment problems which will be greatly helped by proper socialization.
How did his mother of father or both act toward you??? |

| congratulations on your new puppy first off! Owning a doberman puppy is a great time ( though can be frustrating!). Sounds like your guy is definitely not feeling well and perhaps is overwhelmed. Vet trip is in order, and take it slow with him! Just think about how overwhelming a whole new place would be when you're only 9 weeks old! Lots of talking to him and using his name and gentle encouragment and I'm sure that he'll come along |

| Look at jhis gums and see if they are pink. If they are white he needs to go to the vet right now not monday. You can press against the gum behind the fang tooth and it should turn white against the pink.
There will probably an initial "visit" charge where they charge you to walk in the door and everything else is on top of that. What about his shots???
He should feel better in just a couple of days if he is loaded with worms and gets rid of them.
My nine week old puppy pooped at least five times a day. But he would poop and then if I stayed out with him he would poop again fairly quickly.
Has he not pooped since you had him????????
How did his mother and father act toward you?????????
You are not looking a 100's of dollars. I don't know where you live but it should be under $50 for worming.
