can he be taught not to jump the fence?

I am getting a fence for my guy to run. He is just 11 weeks. If I train him through puppy classes can he be trained not to ever jump the fence? My other consern is he loves to eat dirt and anything he can find out there . Pine cones pine needles etec

My Rudy eats dirt too. He buries new bones outside and gets his mouth black with dirt. I wouldn't worry about him eating pine cones and dirt, as long as he doesn't get into anything poisonious. Puppies love to play and get into things. Just supervise him so he stays out of bad stuff. In time, he'll learn to play with bones, toys, and eat his own food. Make sure he has plenty of toys and rawhide bones for play.

I use baby gates extensively in the house--most are only 24" high and none of my dogs would think of jumping them. It takes me about one day to train a visitor that those gates are HUGE INSURMOUNTABLE obstacles (because I said they were). My outside fencing has been a short as 4'--and any of my Dobes could have easily gone over it but they don't--most of them don't even jump on it.

Training--it's all about the training.

As far as the stuff puppies eat--I have no solution except to watch them like a hawk--human kids do the same thing--find something new and it instantly goes in their mouth. With the puppies I yell "NO, drop it!!!" and take it out. As far as I can see most mothers of two leggers do much the same thing. Vigilance is the answer I guess.

I, too, use baby gates... all are 24" high or less (one is the old accordian style that looks like the fences they use to make the rings in obedience/conformation and it is stretched out pretty far.) None of my dogs will jump it. When I first got my pup, she would just run thru the diamond shaped openings. We had a couple lessons and from then on she respected the gate. The accordian gate is my favorite one because it folds up and the cats can get thru it and it's easy to adjust for whatever width the door is.... they are really hard to find because they don't make them anymore

I find it so funny that Mocha respects a baby gate in the house yet I jump her at the stables well over the height of the baby gate! She also jumps one of the little fences I have in the yard, but respects the other fence that is barely a foot higher! They are such funny dogs...
