Bit concerned ...

Hi all,

I was reading on another thread here about weights etc

So what they are as puppies...does not mean much later....all lines grow at different rates.

oxc
Our boy, Barkley, was only 6lbs when we 'resuced' him at 7 1/2 weeks...
He is now 10 weeks old and wieghs 11lbs..even the vet commented that he was small
We know he's going to take after the mum..she's alot slighter than the dad is quite large, but i do worry about his development/weight.

He's been wormed/jabs given and being feed good quality kibble about 3-4 times a day....

He's more than doubled in size since we got him...

Am I being silly to worry? IS he just going to be a small Dobe?

I just want to do the best for him..especially since he had a rough start inlife

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks x

Don't worry! Is he healthy, eating well? Do you love him? Size won't matter in the long run unless you are going to show him or need him as a service dog like one of our posters on here.

And.....you don't know how big his genes will tell him to be, we have no control over that. As long as you feed him properly he will reach HIS potential. We want long healthy lives with our Dobermans....size does not matter.

My Petey was the runt of his litter, when I got him he started to gain 1/2 a pound a day for several months. He is just stopping gaining now at 11.5 months old. He had a month where he gained 17 pounds. Your guy might have growth spurts very soon, and catch up to those rule of thumb numbers.

Enjoy him, they grow up far too quickly and then you want that tiny puppy back!

I agree. There is nothing you can do about the size they are going to end up being. Usually once or twice a week we have somebody posting on here that they are concerned that their puppy isn't going to be big enough. Dobermans aren't supposed to be huge, and as with all dogs there is a varying size range. As long as your puppy is healthy there is nothing to worry about.

My puppy Bo was a little small as well.

My Vet put him on Hills Science Diet as a supplement... He got 2 cans of it a day as a supplement to his regular kibble, it really helped him out alot and he caught up very quickly.

My boy is very tall and lanky. He's never followed the general guidelines as far as weight. He is now barely 70 lbs and 10 months old but his musculature is developing and he doesn't look so disproportionate anymore. He looked very funny at 6 months old, 25" and 45 lbs. Now his height is at a halt and his weight is starting to come on.

I also had a rescue (my first dobe) that was VERY amaciated when we got him around the age of 9-10 months. He was painful to look at. Over the course of the next year he put on weight, gained muscle and was an awesome boy, looking very "normal". You would have never recognized him.

They all develop at different rates. Him being a rescue, well he may have a little catch up to do. Sounds like you love him and that is really all that matters.

As long as he is eating well and you are following the vet's instructions, then you can sit back and continue to love him to pieces!

I've become more relaxed about it now...hubby weighed him yesterday and he was 16.5lbs..so he is gaining and growing well

Here are a few piccies i took of him in our back garden this afternoon..

See how sweet i am..i would never do anything wrong like chew shoes or wires

Hmmm something looks interesting here....

Still looking ...lol....
