| | Alpha | Well thepet gate is out. He jumps over it. I really didn't realize what kind of athletes Dobies really are.
Bo at right around 14-15 weeks now goes up to the back patio doors gets a full head of steam and just hurdles the pet gate when he really wants out. He's ALSO figured out how to open doors too.
So needless to say, I came home to a wrecked house.
I should have named him Houdini instead of Bo. |

| | Alpha | Lol! What a smart puppy!
Ok, thanks for the heads up - now I know not to bother with the pet gate! I guess Elli will be leashed to me for a long time! |

| Guess you weren't using a high enough gate then. Here's the one I bought: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...1&pcatid=12521
Here's what it looks like in my house:
There's no way the dog could clear it. It is held in place by tension, or you can actually screw it into the door frame as well, for dogs who try to crash through it. There will be no moving this thing!

Does it come in different widths? The reason why I got the one I did was because we have an oversized doorway going into the kitchen... and our door handles are the push down type so he's figured that one out pretty quickly.. he just jumps up and lets himself in whatever room he wants now.
Guess I'll just have to lock doors now as well.
I love him to death, but I really wanted to kill him when I came home. LOL
But I guess you can't be mad at him for being smart right? |

I'd HIGHLY recommend this gate. We didn't anchor it to the doorway, but Red has never challenged it, otherwise we would have. It's great quality and served the purpose perfectly. I would buy another one in a heartbeat if I needed to.
And no, I guess you can't punish the pup for being smart! Just being a typical Dobe pup, that's all! |

| | True to You | A gate is a barrier. You set the limits. I have a normal baby gate that I purchased at Walmart years ago. Yes, they did try to do the normal testing with it and stand on it. Doodle jumped it once. I set the limits of it and the boundaries. It is training. I trained them that the gate is the line and they are not to cross it. If they cared to, they would jump anything. Doodle has jumped 5ft fences outside with ease.

| I wonder exactly how high they can jump? Duke is a year old and I've seen him jump, STRAIGHT UP, onto a deck that is 3-1/2 feet off the ground. He had no running start or anything, just straight up. I've been calling him the jumping bean since then. |

| | Alpha | I have a really old baby gate... you know the accordian kind they don't make any more because kids could get their heads stuck in the "diamond" shaped holes... When Isabel was a pup she just squeezed thru the holes. I just worked on training her not to do that and she stopped within a week or so. My gate is stretched out pretty wide and is usually somewhere between 18 and 24 inches high. And up until a month or 2 ago was always just leaning in the door way. I had a friend over who was joking that I could just put string on the ground and that my dogs would stay in their area. It was like my male dobe heard that and started (I think the next day) knocking the gate over and letting everyone out. So now the gate is clipped in place Some of this is probably related to his anxiety which has worsened over the last year
Anyway, you just have to find what works for you and your dog. |

He just would not do it. I could lay a hose on the floor, that was a barrier for him. He was in police training before I got him, maybe they taught him that, who knows. I have no doubt that your male dobie heard what was said, they are shrewd, very shrewd! |
