| It's not how much you pay. It's how much was done with the parents before the breeding vis a vis health testing, temperament testing, conformation merits, etc and the general quality of the pedigree along the same lines - titles in conformation, temperament, performance and the amount of health / longevity knowledge accumulated and passed on.
Additionally, it's about the level of info, support, and help you get after the purchase.

| I agree with Maryanddobes but for 1,800 are you going to be showing him? Duchess was 1,200 for a pet...but includes the ear crop and plus since we were close by she re-taped Duchess's ears every week for us...along with most of the other pups...

| | Alpha | In Dobermans, price does not equal quality. You don't always get what you pay for as some like to believe. Mass producers and puppy millers that don't health test or do responsible breeding will charge thousands for their puppies to people that don't know any better and they get ripped off in more ways than one.
A properly bred puppy with titles on the sire and dams side (both sides is best, at the beginning of the name and after, form follows function and performance/working titles are important in our breed), WAC's, TT's, etc. and health testing from well thought out breeding programs (for generations, this doesn't include at one time had CH.'s somewhere back in the pedigree, needs to be current) in the US generally cost 1,000-1,500 for pet and more for show. These numbers aren’t set in stone though and are variable.
That includes ear cropping, life time breeder support for anything to do with the puppy, puppy vaccinations, socialization, clean well groomed and cherished and loved puppy, registration, a pedigree, a promise to take the dog back if ever needed, etc. and a higher probability of a healthy, happy puppy for many years to come.
In Dobermans, and most other breeds, it pays for you to do your homework in depth on prospective breeders rather than look only at price. Basically, buyer beware - price is not always an indication of quality.

| I paid 1600 for my boy, he was fully health tested, show quality and his ears were done. I also got a good guarantee and a contract with the breeder. I know both of the parent dogs and studied their lineages carefully. As long as your dog is healthy and his parents showed good health then I dont think the money matters |

Good health doesn't mean they passed the last vet check. A vet check, while important for every dog, is not Doberman health testing.
Health testing results are an important way to know the parents show good health and more more likely to produce a healthy puppy. Also, form follows function. If the dog is not built properly, its health is effected, and it can't work, play, run, etc. as efficiently of effectively. Performance and working titles can also show some indication of health. As does longevity in the pedigree. All important things to consider when searching for a puppy.
You can't always look with the human eye and automatically and tell health as some people might think you can. That is why health testing is so very important and increases that probability your young puppy that appears healthy for now will grow up to be healthy and live for many years to come.
Overall, Dobermans are not the healthiest breed out there so it is important when buying a puppy to stack the odds in your favor. Sometimes it is very obvious a dog or puppy in question isn't being treated well and/or isn't healthy, there are signs to look for and other times it isn't as obvious with vWD, thyroid, cardio. Health testing the generations is a must in this breed for parents on both sides of the puppy’s pedigree IMO and an important tool to help improve the health of the breed overall.

| | Guest | I paid $2100 Canadian for my puppy from Dober Von Ryan Luxus. Considering the exchange rate I paid more than $2100 American lol... Dammit. You didn't get ripped off. Unless of course the dog itself has heath issues. | |

| It just depends on who you got the puppy from. A good breeder will not usually let the puppies go until they are around 12-ish weeks old, after their ears have completely healed from the crop and they are ready to be posted. Also they spend a lot of time and money training and competing in their chosen venue and doing all of the necessary genetic health screening on a regular basis. A lot of thought and planning goes into every breeding, not to mention the stud fee (rarely do they breed to dogs in their own backyard). So by the time all is said and done, a loose general average for a pet is normally around $1500 give or take a few hundred, and WELL worth it.

| I don't think it matters what you spend on a puppy as long as its from a reputable breeder with good health testing and what the others have already said. Because your'll spend alot more spoiling and caring for them. If your like me, I already exceeded that and my new one is only 7 months old.
