Puppy whining/yelping in middle of night..helpppppp!!

Hi all,
Well as the title of topic says.....need help!

We've had Barkley for 8 days now...and knew it was too good to be true lol

He sleeps in his crate with door open at night times in our hallway..away from other two dogs. Up until now he's been wonderful..after initial 5 mins settling that would be all we heard of him til about 6am....until last night!

At 2 am he started whining etc, hubby went down 3 times to get him to sttle down again...then proclaimed if he wakes him up again he's outta of here (puppy not hubby) I then got up to him at 3.30am and then again at 5am GRRRRRRrrrrrr!

So..any tips advice on what we could do to stop these middle of the nightcalls???

I know how you feel and also like to hear what others have to say on this. I bought my guy Friday and he did well in his crate that night. Sat not bad but Sunday he woke up at 12.30 2am and 4 am and of course when I took him out he went some and would cry another 20 minutes before going to sleep. Last night better. He woke up at 1 am and then not until we woke up for hubby to go to work. which is early. he gets up for work at 4.30. I have been through this a few times I think it will just take time. I have 2 yorkies and been through it but this guy I hope will sleep thr the nite soon

If he's whining and yelping i guess it's because he wants attention. And if you get up and go see him each time... it only encourages him to do it more often. I am in no way a specialist... but i found that to be true with my dogs. So after ignoring him for a couple of days... he realised that no matter how noisy he is... i'm not getting up ! And he stopped. Takes a lot of patience from you and from your neighbours... but eventually it works

I have to agree with Mahmoud. Think of it in the most basic sense. "I'm in a crate, I'm awake, I'm bored... I want someone to play with me... WHINE WHINE WHINE!!! HEY! someone came to see me! YAY!" By going down to help the dog settle you are just supporting its behaviour. Its SO hard and I know because I have a now 5 month old dobe, so it wasn't that long ago that I went through this stage, but you HAVE to ignore them. If you're concerned about them having to pee in the middle of the night, set your alarm and go down once in the middle of the night every night, but don't respond to howling and barking. They are smart, they will learn that either you come, or you don't. Barking is a lot of work for a puppy, if they aren't getting results, eventually they will get bored and stop and sleep.

on that same hand, what kind of crate are they in? My boy would cry and cry and cry in his crate because we didn't put a blanket it ( I had heard that its better for crate training) but I ended up feeling badly and gave him his blankie. I haven't heard a word since, and that was when he was 8 weeks.

Good luck!!!

Welcome to puppy-hood. Every one of us here had to go through it too. LOL Patience, it will eventually pass...just quit rewarding him with attention every time he makes noise.

If he keeps you up, shut your door so you can sleep. Just make sure he cannot get into any trouble at night. If you have a room where you can put his crate where he would be safe (if you keep the door open), he should be fine. I'd put a bone and toy in there.

My puppy yelped and cried too. They are a handful but as time passes, you'll learn to love your new addition and he will grow up. It gets better, I promise.

Actually I never used my crate when Rudy was a puppy. I slept on a couch with him in the same room as his crate. You could put him in your bed at night if there is enough room. Now that he is older sometimes I use the crate when I have to shower or mow outside. Sometimes I take him in the bathroom with me. The first time he kept whining and looking through the shower door, thinking I was leaving. I just talked and sang. Now I bring in pig's ear or bone and he lays on the floor until I get out (I have the doors shut) -- they do better in time as they figure out everything. You could put his crate in your bedroom -- all sorts of options. Make sure you take him out before your put him in his crate or in bed with you.

Sincerely,

Scoob (Jim)

You can also close his crate door. I meant you can also close the door to his room until morning. I had to clean up all sorts of poop the first night but that was expected. He's 6 months now, and those days are over. Rudy is in the biting phase now. I still have my arms and hands. He has bones and toys -- and my arm. I use a muzzle sometimes and you might want to look into a harness later. Walk him and play with him. Exercise him and he'll be so tired at night, he won't have the energy to yelp all night.

Hahahaha, yes I agree with Mahmoud too. Your puppy is TRAINING you. Be consistent, ignore the bad, praise the good.
And get some ear plugs for your hubby. LOL

Could you put his crate by your bed. Maybe he just wants to be close.
