| Puppy Neuter Question Hello,
My pup will be 6 months old October 2 of this year. I called my vet. He siad not to have him neutered just yet. He still squats when he pees. My vet said to wait until he raises his leg before I have him neutered or else when he gets older he will pee all over himself. He also said something about other male dogs and I don't remember. Rudy's testicles are pretty big but he has not indicated any leg mounting behaviour just yet. My vet said to bring him in when he is 8 months, when he will be sexually mature. I just don't want my dog to start to run. What is your opinion and thanks.

| It seems a little odd that your vet would say he will pee all over himself if he is neutered at this age. A lot of dobe owners wait until their males are over a year to go through with the surgery when hormone levels are more stable, but If his testicles have fully descended you can neuter him now.

| Wow, that's a new (and ridiculous) one. Quote: |

| The vast majority of dogs never do, neutered or not. Quote: |

| I think 8 months is a fine age to neuter. Quote: |

| Then don't let turn him loose in the neighborhood, testicles or not.

Then don't let turn him loose in the neighborhood, testicles or not. | I never intentially turn him loose without supervision. I like to let him run around outside when I am outside. I don't like to have him on a leash all the time, but I am there with him when the leash is off. I had a Doberman as a teenager and I know when that sex drive comes, they can take off, supervised or not. So, I want to get him neutered before that happens.

| | Big Pup | When we picked up cooper from our breeder we had to sign a contract saying that he would be "fixed". The breeder requested that this was done no sooner than 1 yr old, preferrably around 1.5 yrs because growth plates are triggered by hormones-neutering too early imbalances these hormones and the dog will grow to be unproportionate (long legs, shallow chest...), and this could lead to tendon and joint problems because the musces etc. cannot support the disproportionate growth...I have heard about this before and am going to wait longer to have Cooper done-I know Dobies grow for a long time, also this gives them a chance to become mentally mature. I have heard of a Dobie pup who was done at 6 months and had an accident at about 1 yr where he just slipped on some ice an tore both tendons (the ones one the back legs that are like our achilles tendons) and required massive surgery. Also my GSD was done at 7 months and was all leg-goofy looking boy . Hope this helps, or at least gives you something to discuss with your breeder and vet... |

| I have a contract that requires him to be neutered. He will not have any offspring. But, there is no set time for the neuter. He will be neutered by the time time he is 1 year old. I am just trying to figure the correct time. Many vets say 6 months. Then my Vet said 8 months. He is a good dog and I love him. I monitor him when he is outside off leash. But dogs can take off when the sex drives takes over. I don't want him to take off. |

| Our Titus was neutered at the age of 7 months. I know that a lot of people say to neuter your boy at 1 or old but as you can see from his picture he developed quite nicely and never had an issue with raising his leg to go pee.

| He looks like my Rudy! He is beautiful! So when he pees, does he raise his leg or does he squat?
Thanks,

I don't want him to take off. | Almost all the male dogs I've owned were not neutered until they were older then 18 months....not one ever "took off." I don't expect Petey to either. I'm waiting a few more months to do the dirty deed to my boy for the above mentioned reasons. I've done a lot of reading on the subject and my veterinarian has also....he said I am not to rush in to it either. He said the studies point to better long term health if we wait until Petey is at least 18 months old.
