Question How much to feed?

Hi All,

My first post, lovely forum you have!

I have a 10 week old puppy, and Im struggling to figure out how much to feed him. Every website gives different advice, and reading this forum the general advice is to read the packet. Here is my problem, the packet states :

Adult weight : 25 - 45kg
Puppy age: 6 weeks to 3 months
feed : 210-580g per day

(BETA :: PUPPY CHICKEN)

as you can see, its very vague. He always seems to be hungry, even after a feed (4 times a day, 2 handfuls per feed) so I thought Id settle this matter once and for all and ask the pro's!

Please help, how many grams of food should I be feeding my male puppy per day?

at that age i would give small handfuls in the bowl for a max of 10 mins or if the pup just walks away do it 3 times a day.
I think i used this method until 3ish months old then went on to what the back of the bags said.

just remember the guide on the bag is just that a GUIDE they all ways say a bit more than you actually need

Yeah, currently I give him 2 big handfulls, 4 times a day, and he eats it real quick, never leaves anything, then runs over to the food bag and begs for more.

I feel I should be feeding him more not less, but scared not to overfeed him.

He does not look overweight, and the stomach never reaches the same width as his chest.

Make the handfuls smaller and do this for 10 mins and change to 3 times a day.

just keep an eye on his tummy if you think he is looking fat or bloated then drop back the amount.

I can only comment on how I do it maybe a breeder will jump on and comment.

What you are feeding him will be a factor also. Different kibble = different levels of nutrition = amount fed.

Better grades of kibble will require less per feeding than a poorer quality kibble.

A healthy active pup is always going to look hungry

Our pup came home with us at twelve weeks. The breeder is a very recognized breeder of twenty plus years. She recomended feeding three times a day with a premium dry dog food. We selected Wellness after several recomendations and Kaiser really likes it. He receives 1 and a half cups three times daily with a scoop of low fat cottage cheese and about two ounces of alternateing meat additives. We add grilled chicken, ground beef , turkey or ham.We add water to the dry kibble and soak for approx. 5 mins then warm in the micro for thirty five seconds. He finishes the entire bowl and licks it clean virtually every time.
Good luck!

When Spencer was 10 weeks we feed four times a day.
7:00 AM
11:00AM
3:00PM
7:30PM
For a total of about 3 cups. He did well and we went to three times daily around 12 weeks. He now gets between 3.5 and 4.5 cups a day. The Doc. says he looks great!
We take several different things into consideration when feeding him. How he looks, what he weighs, his age what the Doc. Says, and the recommendations on the kibble. Each and every Dobie will be unique and will need to be adjusted accordingly.

Good luck!

ducati has always eaten almost double the recommended feeding amount since i got him at 10 weeks. when i first went by the suggested feed he started getting real thin so i just kept putting more per meal til he got to a balanced lean side where you can barely see his bottom ribs. i prefer dobermans on the lean side rather than getting pudgy.

right now hes fed on acana grain free pacifica, he was on 1 cup 3 times a day but now 1 1/2 twice per day. he would eat the entire bag in one sitting if he could too. hes 4 months and sitting right above 40 lb which is right about where he should be.

Oh damn I forgot how I figured out how much Kleo ate lol...but even as a puppy she'd eat two/three times depending on the day. She would get around 1 1/2 cups twice a day till she hit the 6-7 month age mark then she was moved up to around 2 1/2 cups a day and finally 3-31/2 cups a day depending on how she was acted when feeding time.

Good luck with your pup!!!! Enjoy him till he starts eating everything lol

Cool

At what age do you typically change from feeding three times a day to two times a day?

oh i have no idea but i figured since hes 4 months now and has better bladder/digestive control i'd feed him twice now, and it makes it easier for me to feed him consistently on time since i don't have to worry about his lunch meal

Alex is four months old, fed raw, and eats between 2 and 3 pounds (900 to 1200 grams) of food per day. It really isn't an exact science how much to feed your dog, it totally depends on the puppy. Try feeding Kozak a little more. If his poop starts to loosen up it is a sign you have fed too much. If his poop stays strong, give him a little more; he's a growing boy. I'd also recommend looking into the site above provided by eisel and feed a better food than the Beta Purina.

Note: Alex at 4 months weighs in at 45 pounds .. about normal.

Wow, you're more ambitious and energetic than I am. I've always just fed kibble from the get-go, with a little canned mixed in for dinner.

Also, about what I bolded, do you really mean "worm", or do you mean "warm"? I've hear of lots of breeds of goats, but never a "Worm" goat.

There's a new Dobie in town!

Hi, first time here! Been reading various post, and I like the community you guyz have formed on this site. Really enjoyed the different advise and opinions you all share. Here's our boy, Caesar! A typical dobie pup, on the very devilish side. As per his name, he tries to conquer his world! He is a terror so far, and chomp everything in site like a piranha. My 2 cats are not happy, but one is starting to put up with him. Our chow chow is indifferent, of course, but she definitely wants him off her back: he grabs a mouth full of her fur at his encounter and loves it! She doesn't think it's funny at all, so we have to keep him on a leash for each meeting. Luckily, she enjoys being outside having her quiet time, and we keep Caesar inside. I am exhausted playing the police and having to regulate his every moves... but he is very smart, and a sweetheart when he finally calms down. I know ONE day... I will look back at these few months of adaptation and smile!!!
