Too cold for puppy to stay outside over night?

Its currently 50 degrees out here in LA with a low of 38 degrees for tonight, I made a makeshift area for the puppy till I can find a nice dog house which is nice and covered with blankets on the ground in the backyard and the top is also covered as well as the side with a large piece of wood. My question is, is it too cold for my 9 1/2 week old puppy to stay outside over night?

YES! It's too cold for an adult doberman to stay outside, too!

Besides that, these are dogs who crave being with their people, it's just..wrong..to try to make them outside dogs.

Well..I don't even want to say what I think about the kind of "breeder" who'd keep their dogs like that, let alone a liter of puppies.

Dog house???

Dobermans are house pets. What kind of breeder told you that?

your breeder told a lie.

It is not OK for him to stay outside.

sleep outside yourself with just a light blanket and no clothes. let me know how cold it feels.

Big Warm Hugz to Simba!

Dobermans are not an outside breed and shouldn't be left out in hot or cold weather! That gorgeous sleek low shedding coat that makes them such a perfect house pet means that they can't keep warm when outside- they only have a single layer of hair, no warm insulating undercoat, and the lack of body fat which makes the Doberman look soo elegant also means that they are lacking yet another source of insulation. Not being able to keep warm doesn't mean they can keep cool in hot weather either, black coats heat up nicely in the sunlight, I swear Lottie's coat could burn me sometimes when she has been napping in the sunlight by the window! Another thing to keep in mind is sunburn, exposed areas of skin can get burned on dogs just like it can on people, especially if your dog is lighter coloured... places like the inside of cropped ears, the nose and I'm sure on balding dog's bodies too.

Are you kidding? Why did you get a Doberman if you were going to keep it outside? Did you do any research on Dobermans before purchasing your Doberman? Dobermans need a lot of love and attention and your Doberman won't get it living outside in a makeshift dog house. There are a lot of Back Yard Breeders that will tell you anything you want to hear just to sell their pups. Please research the breed and know that your puppy probably has not been health tested and neither has the Dam or Sire. I don't know this is true but any reputable DPCA breeder would not tell you that it is ok to keep your puppy outside. All breeder's Puppy Questionnaires ask "where will the puppy live" and "where will the puppy sleep". I would not sell you a puppy if I tknew it was going to be an outside dog. Check out the DPCA Breeder Referral and see if your breeder is listed. Then go kick yourself for not doing research on the breed.

I understand what you are trying to say, however, this is not really helpful to the OP.

The OP has gotten a lot of useful feedback and brought the pup inside. ptkking bothered to get on the forum, seek advice, and do the right thing. I don't see how this particular post is going to help the OP with the new pup, which they are now responsible for regardless of where he/she came from.

Edit: To the OP- stick around, keep asking questions, it's going to be a steep learning curve!

"It's certainly ok to keep a Doberman outside during the day in mild climates. However, they should be brought in at night or when the weather is too hot or too cold." Got that off DPCA Breeder Referral. And that's exactly what I am going to do. My dog is not going to be alone hours on end, however he will be out in the yard during the days considering LA weather is suitable for such conditions. I actually did do my research and I purchased a GUARD DOG. He will be guarding my home from any future burglars who decide to jump over my fence one more time, and the only way my GUARD dog can GUARD my home, is if he is out in the yard during the days. I got on the forum and asked because I knew in the back of my mind he should be inside and thanks to the great advice I brought him back in, its my father who wanted to keep him out. Don't jump to conclusions so fast there pal!

Umm sorry to burst your bubble but the Doberman is NOT a "guard" dog. The Doberman was bred with the specific purpose of personal protection, i.e. protecting their people... not a property or livestock guard.

I can find more if you'd like.

Don't get me wrong, I understand they were bred specifically for personal protection. I read all about Loius Dobermann. However from what my research told me, they also make wonderful guard dogs!

You should probably educate yourself on the difference between an area guard dog (certain breeds of which were specifically designed for that purpose--Dobermans not being one of them) and personal protection dogs.

You may also want to speak with some actual crime experts.

It's much more likely that your Doberman will be shot, stolen, or poisoned, than that his presence will prevent a serious criminal from entering your premises.

The presence of any large dog can be a deterrent to petty wannabe types, but serious criminals have ways of dealing with dogs on the property.

Your first link is notorious for misinformation and being written (and read by) novices and non-experts.

Your second link--that breeder is a joke.

Hey, don't listen to us, though--go to a bunch of trials and watch working dogs and ask the folks there. I doubt you'll get enlightened in a polite way, but you'll get elightened

For the poor dogs sake, we can only hope.

Hm... I guess then I'm pretty darn mad for being told lies and reading about false information, I guess there is a lot of false info on the internet and that's my fault. I also choose the Doberman because from what my research tells me they make awesome buddies, and get attached to the owner, that's the type of love I'm looking for from my dog, that's the main reason I picked Doberman aside from I was told it can guard as well. I know everyone here is just trying to help and I appreciate that don't be misunderstood from my comments.
