Hello. I currently have a male Doberman that is 7.5 months and weighs a little over 70 lbs. I am feeding him Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy food. Via the bag and our vet, I am feeding him 4.5 cups a day. I feed him at 6am and at 6pm- a little over 2 cups each time. He will want to eat by 3p and again by 9p. He is constantly asking for more food, even waking up in the middle of the night for more. I feed him yogurt, carrots and apples for snacks. He is neutered and complete with all vaccines. We are not overly active- walks/runs in the morning and evening. I am wondering if anyone has suggestions on a new food that I should try or if I am feeding him enough.
Thank you!
Of course, the amounts posted on the bags are just an average--your dog may need more or less than the stated amount. If you can post a picture of your dog standing from the side and the top, we could help you judge if he is at the proper weight at the moment.
You can also try green beans in his food to help fill him up if he is just a food-a-holic.
You have not described your pup's "physical appearance. Over the years, I have owned dogs that were absolute piggies and would eat anything in front of them. And still beg for more! This would fit my currents youngest's attitude towards food. By the same token, a few of my boys almost had to be coerced to eat a decent meal.
The bottom line (IMO) is not their desire to eat (or lack of)..... It's maintaing a proper weight for his age and size.
Perhaps, as Mel said, you could post a pic of your boy. Side and top shots. That would help. There are lots of obese dogs waddling around today because their owners acquiesce to their dogs food demands.
It also depends on his exercise/activity levels and current body condition -- posting a photo from the side and top down can help to judge this. You can add in a dog appropriate fruit and vegetable mix if you feel he's just being greedy (be sure to use a blender/juicer to make it into a pulp) and add some to his food to make him feel a little fuller after a meal.
Also want to point out that sometimes when I dog is desexed, it can change their appetite (increase or decrease) -- you also need to remember that because your dog is neutered, there is the potential for him to put on more weight than normal.
Yup... I add pureed apples, pureed pumpkin. frozen peas and green beans, blueberries. Anything. Mccoy loves lettuce and celery. There is always rice and potatoes.
BTW... Appetite increase after neutering, has been my experience also. Serious weight gain in a very short period of time, if their diet is not closely monitored.
Thank you all! I will post pics shortly. I am new to DT and also this is also my first Doberman. I have had Shephards and Labs in the past. But I must admit, Indy has been one of the best dogs, even at his young age. I'll be back with pics!
