Question Three concerns...

This is my first experience with a Dobie. I have three concerns. (my dobie is now 2 months)

1. Have you heard of Liver color dobies? I searched on web and it shows there are black, brown, blue and red dobies. But none referred as Liver color. Aren't they good pups / mixed? any idea / comments would be appreciated.

2. It's friendly with us and it would even run away when a stranger comes in to my home. But my dobie tends to bite me and my little 2yr old baby. What should I do to overcome this or is this normal. Any advice?

3. Any advice on how to train the "STAY" command. It seems to be so playful and I cannot figure it out how to teach him that.

Hi and welcome to the forum! Glad you found us here.

Is this your first dog?? Have you any experience with raising a pup?

Your pup is just a baby so biting and/or teething is quite normal and to be expected. To correct usually a firm (but calm) NO combined with ignoring the behaviour should teach your pup that this behaviour is not acceptable.

Dobermans are extremely intelligent and very easily trained. They learn quick! They are also a very sensitive breed, they really do want to please you so make training fun and always positive.

I have never heard of liver coloured dobermans.

As for the 'stay' command...patience and consistency are key. I personally would teach 'sit' first...easier, and IMO should be in the sit position when given the stay command.

Now....is your pup a male or female? Do you have a name for your pup? And finally...we need pics here!! We love pics!!

red = red-ish brown
fawn = sandy beige color (dilute of red) maybe this is what you describe as "liver"
black = black
blue = gray (dilute of black)

all 4 colors will have rust colored markings.

I would recommend signing up for puppy classes if you haven't already. If this is your first dog, you will definitely need some obedience training to successfully raise this pup. At 8 weeks of age, the behaviors you describe are very normal. But it makes me wonder, how long have you had the puppy? Typically it's best to leave pups with their litter mates until they are 8 weeks of age or older in order for the pup to learn bite inhibition and develop socialization skills (among other things).

I have never heard of liver color dobies before.. I imagine that the red could be what your reffering too? They also go by rust colored.

Nos is about 5 months old now and we are still working on stay.. but he is good at sit down and shake.. Good luck with your new pup!!

You guys are great! Thanks!!

Thanks for the input!

I brought RUBY to my home when he was 6+ weeks.

I'm confused because even in the Health record book it says "LIVER COLOR". I guess in my country vets reffer red as Liver color. Ruby is dark brown (redish) in color. According to greenkoukis description I think RUBY is a red dobie.

But I'd like more input from those who are aware of LIVER COLOR dobies.

Congratulations on your new friend...he's very handsome
As for biting, it's already been stated. It's normal at this age...he's learning his surroundings and what he can "get away with" if you will. Remember, dogs don't have arms and hands and fingers to use to learn their surroundings. A large part of dogs learning their space and their people (and other pets) is using their mouths. You have determine if this acceptable, and lay down the rules from the beginning.
Look into the NILF (nothing in life is free) method. There's a lot of good info, and the earlier you start..the better you are.
Also enroll in classes.
For the stay. It's a hard command, and to expect an 8 week old puppy to get it, and be solid is asking a lot. I recommend starting with easier commands, like sit, down etc. Learning "paw" or shake" is relatively easy for them also, as it's a natural dog behavior to offer a paw. After sit and down are solid then try stay.
Give the command, and treat. For every MILIsecond your dog stays in that position give a "good stay" and reward. Keep this VERY brief at first, and then offer a release command. They NEED to know there is a word to release them...otherwise they may never understand, or not stay for the required amount of time. Once the stay is good for a few seconds, move on.

Please keep in mind, no amount of internet teaching of reading will train your puppy. Find a reputable trainer and start classes as soon as they allow your pup in (age can be a factor). For now, do basic sit, down come, and socialize the HELL out of your puppy.
Hope you enjoy DT, there's lots to learn.

As far as classes, what area are you in? Contact a breed club maybe in your area to find out if they recommend anyone, or ask your vet.

there is no such thing as liver.

RUBY looks red and tan ( or brown and tan in Europe)

as for stay... he's probably not going to be focused enough to learn stay for some time. He's only an itty bitty baby dog. 6 weeks is VERY young for him to have been taken from his mom and siblings. This might explain the extreme nipping as he never learned about bite inhibition from his mom.

Please sign up for an obedience class. Especially because you have a small child, you want to make sure that he's trained and respects you. He will be big before you know it.

Thanks a lot everyone!!!!!

I'm interested in knowing about signing up for an obedience class. Please add your personal recommendations / comments.

As I live in Asia I don't think there are such classes conducted here. Any information which I could get online is much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! You have a beautiful "red" Doberman but it may well be common to label the color as "liver" in your country. If you go to Google and search on the phrase "NILIF dog training" you will find lots of good information on training your puppy with the NILIF philosophy (Nothing In Life Is Free). It is basically a barter or trade system - you trade your puppy a toy or a treat or a head scratch for his good behavior. Please read as much as you can and then start right away using this system.

Do you have a "puppy-proof" area for your puppy to sleep and where you can put him when YOU need a time-out from puppy? He needs a place such as a crate or small area you can safely block off until he has learned all the "rules" of the house. You can read more about using a crate for training your puppy at this site:

Crate Training | The Humane Society of the United States

Looks like everyone gave you great advice, but I will throw out my 2 cents for the "liver" color. I have a liver and white Springer Spaniel and she is the same color as my red dobe. I think its all based on breed.

One more thing...

Yes. I praise him for all the good work he does. I have a crate for the puppy and he obeys "come", "go", "sit" and of course his name. I donít have a puppy proof area. I've let him free to walk in my home and I take him out to play. once or twice a day.

Thanks a lot for the advising me on the "NILIF philosophy".

Can you share your thoughts on bathing a dobie. I don't think I'm good at it.

When to bathe is up to when the owner thinks it's necessary...I don't think dobermans have as much as a "dog" smell as some other breeds, kind of like greyhounds don't IMO. I don't have a set day of the week/month I give my dobe a bath, it's just if he needs one, he get's one. That might be once a month or twice a week, it just depends. I do a lot of outdoor things with my dobe so he tends to get dirty often. It's important to use a dog shampoo, as human shampoo can dry out a dog's skin. Also, you don't have to use shampoo everytime, only when you feel he really needs it. You can rinse with water and that usually gets loose dirt off the coat without having to give him a full bath. Good luck

3rd. - I just followed the simple steps and now I've got great controll on that!

Does anyone know about LIVER COLOR dobies? or is it the Red dobies you reffer by that?
It is the red. I have a liver colored male. His color is the same as the liver color in a GSHP. His rust markings are fawn (very pale). He looks good, but for a dobe he is a poor specimen for conformation. Love him more than anything regardless of his flaws. His photo is my avatar photo (over on the left there).

I bathe my dogs at least once a year. I use Baby shampoo and don't get a dry coat from it. I use cool water, not hot and not shockingly cold. I bathe as necessary aside from the annual event. My puppy has a coat that seems to hold dust from the agility barn more than my girls do.

On the "stay" command, instead of teaching him the "stay" command I would rather recommend teaching a "release" command. For example, if you tell him to "sit", he must stay seated until you give him a release command, I use the word "free".

I meant MY DOG- CATO - he is a poor specimen. Sorry for confusing you

And I LOVE HIM regardless - my dog. It was not an instruction for you - you obviously love your dog very much, and I could not possibly evaluate your puppy from a couple of casual photos. So sorry to upset you.
