Dead baby mouse/rat in Harley's water

OMG!! I just found a dead baby mouse or rat in Harley's water bucket. It wasn't there yesterday before going to bed. Not sure how it got in there? The bucket of water is inside the laundry. We have a doggie door. Could it have climbed in and drowned? Or could Harley have caught it and put it in there?? Not sure if he drank from there while it was in there. Should I be taking him to the vet??

I probably sounded like a lunatic in my post! Just got really freaked at the dead mouse. Harley seems fine. My min pin got meningitis from eating a snail so just a bit panicky about what he can get from a dead mouse. No rabies here.

Just spoke to the vet. He said all should be okay as it was in a large bucket of water and he didn't ingest the mouse. He said to watch out for any vomiting or diarrhoea. Phew!

LOL! I've just posted and answered my own thread! What a nutter!!

It likely did climb in and then drown, especially if the bowl is fairly large/deep. I see this a lot with squirrels and water troughs in the pastures at work.

Glad you talked to your vet! Just keep an eye on your dogs but my guess is that everything will be fine
(I'd probably have panicked a little at first too!)

Your dog is a genius.

He invented the better mouse trap.

We have 4 bird watering "stations" in front of our house - living in the desert, and loving wildlife, we enjoy helping the birds, and an occasional bunny or lizard, stay hydrated. We also have a large bucket of water on the porch for the dogs. So the day before yesterday, when I went to change the water, there was a dead kangaroo rat floating in the bucket, staring up at me. I was SO upset - it could have gone to one of the 2 in-ground birdbaths, and been perfectly safe! I was bummed. But I understand your concern - many years ago, we had a German Shorthair who caught a rat while romping in the park in New York City, and got leptospirosis, which damaged his liver, and he had to be on a special pre-digested diet his entire life.

happens all the time around the farm.

we just dump the bucket, rinse and re fill.

no problems with birds, swine, cows, horses, goats, dogs etc. who may have drank water with a dead mouse in it.................. knock on wood.

we have healthy mice and rats here.

my dogs do not like deceased mice............
