| Sassy Dobe who likes to Talk back.. We've been taking Jasper to Obedience classes & of course working on this from home. I find that some times (most of the time) He likes to "Sass back at me". I tell him to "Sit"--and he does it, with a protesting bark as he does it. Sometimes he will do 3 or 4 'tricks' then start the barking, as if to say "I'm bored, or I'm not doing these silly things for you anymore!"
Sometimes its funny & hard not to laugh. but it was embarrassing in class last night. He is VERY vocal dobe.. whimpers & whines about things he is annoyed by. He doesn't really fully bark much, just during training. Other times, when he whines, I tell him "quiet". But when I give him a command--like "Sit" and he sits & barks (at the same time) my DH thinks I shouldnt reward him for doing that. But I can't tell him "No" when he barks, because he may think the No is for the Sit.
Just wondering if anyone else experienced this with their pups? or had any suggestions??
thanks!

| | Alpha | Oh yes, Jager has an opinion about everything!!! I find by increasing his exercise and play time outside his opinions have become less. It is hard on those days it rains and I don't have as much time on others as I would like...ug,those days are awful! "bark bark,I want on the coach....bark bark, I want to go outside....bark bark, you must pet me...bark bark, I want that toy in the toy box....bark bark, I am just going to bark at you for no reason.
I love the "Sit" opinion....Jager just takes his own sweet little time to sit...It is almost like there is a disease (oops dragon that is) on the floor and it will get him if he sits...now if someone has a treat...you can whisper sit and he is down before you can even finish the word!

Jasper doesn't really bark, unless i'm training him--he does little woofs at people passing by, out the front window. But he's mostly a whiner, when he wants to go out, or wants food, or just attention from us, etc.
Its like this is his one way to test me with dominance ..just like a little kid. And he might be winning, because half the time I can't help but crack up, because he's so cute.
The trainer suggested some good-smelly, yummy treats for training. Something special, to keep his attention & move faster through the commands to keep his mind busy & from getting bored. And not to do too much. When he starts that behavior take a break from it.
We'll give it a try, along with more exercise. He's been in a lot this past week, because of all the rain we've had.
thanks!

| Lexx has taken to complaining when i do certain training exercises too.... he's 16 months and he's never ever done this but the other day I almost burst out laughing as I made him heel down the road and he was trilling and chirping and barking and whining at me in obvious protest about having to HEEL instead of going to the park...honestly.. who makes a poor abused doberboy heel right by the fun bouncy park? WHO? |

It basically said that dobermans are different than any other breed. When you give them a command they have to first analyze the command and find a purpose in obeying the command before they react to it. Where other breeds will obey the command no questions asked. When I had Sheba and Tristan I always had to try not to crack up when I would tell them to do something. And they would look away as if they didn't hear me. They were both really good at the selective hearing game. But I never let them get away with it.LOL |

| I had a guy who would stare intently at me when I told him something (like, "want a puppy biscuit?") then stare up into space for a second or two, then back at me, then up, then at me--I've seen people do the same thing when they are thinking. Then all of the sudden, the light would go on and "WOW, YES, I Want One!!!!!!". Cracked me up.

Boris is quite the opposite when it come to training time and is totally silent, especially in class. He does think about/analyze everything you say to him though, and when you see that tongue come out of the side of his mouth, you know he's accepting what you're doing.

| One time at class a long time ago during sit stays a Bull Mastiff bitch did her sit without getting up she used her front feet and turned her back to her Momma. Don't think she like obedience class everyone had a terrible time trying not to laugh out loud. She did her sit stay but with her back to her Momma. |

He went into a down BEAUTiFULLY a few times yesterday.. He knows it all pretty well... I think he's just too smart & too stubborn.

So we decided we need to get something good for class & use the reg. goodies at home--where there are less distractions.

| | Lil Pup | I told my 5 month old dobie no she couldn't go out. She showed me her teeth, but was wagging her tail. She seems to be very vocal to the alpha dog (schnauzer) but she doesn't try to take his food or bone. She has started to be vocal to me. I hope this isn't a sign of future aggression. |

| Here is Chase talking about going on strike because there are not enough cookies in the house, then he goes on telling me a story about a black squirrel taunting him on his walk. Then he starts complaining how wet and cld the grass is under his feet while he is out on potty break, and demands I lay out towels for him

He also does it sometimes when I stop playing, but he thinks he isn't finished.
Personally, I think it's adorable! My parents don't feel the same way about it though... LOL!
