| | Big Pup | being "rejected" by a breeder im feeling pretty sad at the moment.
months and months ago, before the puppies had been born, i enquired about a certain uk breeders forthcoming litter. i was put on a waiting list, and then on the 1st august twelve puppies were born and a red/tan bitch was available, which i what i wanted.
i have talked to the breeders on the phone a few times, i paid my deposit and arranged to view the puppies today. my brother took time out of his day to take a 200 mile round trip to view the puppies with me.
however we didnt get to see the puppies after all, because the husband of the breeding team thought i wasnt "good enough" to own one of his puppies. i know its better that breeders ARE picky and dont just hand out their puppies to anyone, but i feel so upset.
the questions i was asked today could have been asked over the phone. plus some of the things were so ridiculous. like, i dont work at the moment and my plan was to wait until the puppy is older, maybe 4-5 months before i get a part time job. even if i DID work, she would have never been left alone. they had a problem with this... because puppies need "routine". i understand this, but other people own dogs and dont give up the rest of their life entirely.
they also said things like basically "what about when the dog shits and pisses all over the house", but seriously... why would a healthy dog do such a thing unless it was neglected. another thing is they say their dogs are renown for having excellent temperaments but in the next breath were saying dobermans are "dangerous" and can "tear into you" "just like rottweilers can". i think that kind of attitude is part of the reason breed specific legislation exists.
one of the other things mentioned was "what if you want to have a family in 10 years time" (im 23). i honestly didnt know what to say to that, its so offensive and ridiculous. they also said that because i dont own a dog currently, all ive done is "read about things" (ive bought so many books suggested on these forums, and read so many sites), and "its" not "in my blood", and dont have any idea about showing dogs that i wasnt suitable.
i asked about feeding raw and they said its "best left to the professionals". i asked about the correct age for spaying and they asked why i would want to spay the dog anyways. i cant understand it. i also checked epupz after i came home from the breeders and saw they had "my" puppy listed as available before we even got to their house, so i dont think they ever planned to let me have the puppy to begin with.
im just ranting and complaining really. i just feel so upset, because i have already bought "her" (i had her name picked out too) a crate, two bowls, a matching lead and collar and name tag and ive been counting down the days until the end of the month so i can take her home, and now i dont have a puppy anymore. :[
i cant understand why people cant be straightforward about things to begin with... even just a disclaimer saying "we only sell dogs to show homes or owners with adequate prior experience" would be better for everyone. :[
edit: yes i did get my deposit back!! i wouldnt have left without it after the way i was treated.

| Maybe a blessing in disguise, hope they returned your deposit. During the time I was looking there were a few who got me excited until I researched them. Some were down right thieves tacking deposits on dogs that did not even exist. I know your disappointed now but the right pup will find you, be patient and careful.

| Wow, I can't believe it. I think you're right they could have asked those questions on the phone and could and should have told you before your trip they were not sure about you.
The whole thing really doesn't make much sense. I, too, hope you get your deposit back.

And now you have a better sense of what questions to ask them to weed them out. And, you know what questions breeders are likely to ask you. Download a typical standard breeder application (maybe a DT breeder will provide theirs?), then fill it out and use it as your standard template. Stay with it and you will get the good doberman you deserve.

i have been trying to think of a reason why they would have acted this way and i cant find a sufficient reason... it was just rude and really quite mean also.
they knew how far away i lived and still let us travel all that way to basically humiliate me.
