| | Lil Dog | What a sad story, rescue would be a win/ win situation, you get a dog and the dog gets a home. It would be a good way to "prove" yourself to breeders. I do understand that they would be reluctant to sell a baby to someone who has not owned a dobe, they are high maintanence. But they should have told you that over the phone and not get your hopes up. A lot of great dogs are in rescue. |

| Yes, I agree, there is a little girl just waiting for you to find her.
And, from good breeders that will probably become friends for life.

| I'm sorry, but this is pretty sad!!! For one you had everything ready for your new pup and what really *sorry the language* pisses me off is that a good breeder would ask you questions (their's were a little freaky) before taking a damn deposit and having you drive 200 miles to see your pup. What a shady no good breeder. I hope you find a better breeder and I'm so sorry you got jerked around. What an a$$hole of a breeder! Quote:

i have talked to the breeders on the phone a few times, i paid my deposit and arranged to view the puppies today. my brother took time out of his day to take a 200 mile round trip to view the puppies with me.
however we didnt get to see the puppies after all, because the husband of the breeding team thought i wasnt "good enough" to own one of his puppies. i know its better that breeders ARE picky and dont just hand out their puppies to anyone, but i feel so upset.
the questions i was asked today could have been asked over the phone. plus some of the things were so ridiculous. like, i dont work at the moment and my plan was to wait until the puppy is older, maybe 4-5 months before i get a part time job. even if i DID work, she would have never been left alone. they had a problem with this... because puppies need "routine". i understand this, but other people own dogs and dont give up the rest of their life entirely.
they also said things like basically "what about when the dog shits and pisses all over the house", but seriously... why would a healthy dog do such a thing unless it was neglected. another thing is they say their dogs are renown for having excellent temperaments but in the next breath were saying dobermans are "dangerous" and can "tear into you" "just like rottweilers can". i think that kind of attitude is part of the reason breed specific legislation exists.
one of the other things mentioned was "what if you want to have a family in 10 years time" (im 23). i honestly didnt know what to say to that, its so offensive and ridiculous. they also said that because i dont own a dog currently, all ive done is "read about things" (ive bought so many books suggested on these forums, and read so many sites), and "its" not "in my blood", and dont have any idea about showing dogs that i wasnt suitable.
i asked about feeding raw and they said its "best left to the professionals". i asked about the correct age for spaying and they asked why i would want to spay the dog anyways. i cant understand it. i also checked epupz after i came home from the breeders and saw they had "my" puppy listed as available before we even got to their house, so i dont think they ever planned to let me have the puppy to begin with.
im just ranting and complaining really. i just feel so upset, because i have already bought "her" (i had her name picked out too) a crate, two bowls, a matching lead and collar and name tag and ive been counting down the days until the end of the month so i can take her home, and now i dont have a puppy anymore. :[
i cant understand why people cant be straightforward about things to begin with... even just a disclaimer saying "we only sell dogs to show homes or owners with adequate prior experience" would be better for everyone. :[
edit: yes i did get my deposit back!! i wouldnt have left without it after the way i was treated. |

| What absolute horror stories! Why are some people just so rotten?
Charlotte - I am so sorry to hear what you had to go through. To get your hopes up like that...I almost cried when I read the part about having everything ready. I would be heartbroken too. I'm sure it's not much consolation now, but it will all work out in the end and you'll end up with your dream Dobe from a breeder who may end up becoming a friend and mentor.
rainddobes - What a tragic story. What's even crazier is that, as you said, you're not the only person something awful like this has happened to. I'm glad it all worked out in the end for you...I looked at your site, Shiloh was a stunning dog. |

| Ho Charlotte,
I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to you. I too had a bad experience with a breeder. Don't let that leave a bad taste in your mouth. Do your research thouroughly and ask them as many questions as they ask you (and if they answer in detail without being annoyed, then you know its a good breeder).....trust me they good ones are out there....you just need to do the leg work. Good Luck! Quote:

I am not sure how to console you Charlotte this breeder doesn't sound like they were the right choice for you to get a puppy from. Now a days in this terrible economy people have to work. In order to provide for your self and your puppy the breeders should have expected you would have to work at some point. And as far as planning for your family status down the road if you raised the puppy properly with their guidance you dog would have adapted to changes in your life. Maybe you should just take a deep breath and step back for now so you have some time to deal with this emotionally before you begin your search again. Like many of my fellow breeders I have turned people down for puppies but I always tell them why with out hurting their feelings (I hope). I have also talked allot of people out of getting a Doberman when I felt this breed was just not the right choice for them and their lifestyle. I am sorry this happened to you.
Rainddobes is a friend a wonderful home I would send another dog to live with her in heartbeat. I know the story she told about her past experience with another breeder very well. The breeder in Rainddobes story does have a history of doing that type of thing to allot of people. And Rainddobes a FABULOUS home! Sometimes bad things happen to very good people. This may be the case with you too Charlotte |

| How awful. Sounds like you got lucky, though. Goofy breeder's make goofy doggies, sometimes with temperament problems or other genetic difficulties. You know, I'd recommend that you interview the breeders and be as concerned with what you think of them, as what they think of you. There are those out there who only want the money and are not motivated by the love of the dog, and may not even be raising puppies in a humane, healthy and loving way and you want to make sure you weed those out. Sounds like that may have happened for you. You will find the perfect little angel for you. I just know it. Now, that you are on DT you are not alone with it. Post photos when you get your dear little guy! |

| Awwwh, I'm so sorry, What a bad experience to have. It was a blessing in disguise though, sounds like they wouldn't have been very great to deal with down the road either, if you had purchased a pup from them.
Best of luck with your search! |

| | Big Pup | rainddobes - that is such a terrible, sad story. i had to hold my tears back when i was reading it. goodness you must have felt absolutely heartbroken.
thanks for everyones replies. honestly it makes me feel so much better to know this forum exists so that i can talk with people who understand how i feel about this and to also tell me "look, these breeders arent right for you, you got a lucky escape" and to put things into perspective for me.
im upset because my little babygirl wont be coming home like i thought, but on the other hand why would i want any pet from breeders such as the ones i met today. not because they didnt allow me to have a puppy (im not being like "WELL I DONT WANT WANT NOW ANYWAYS" and throwing all my toys out the pram), but because they we so rude and as someone else said, went about asking their (his, really, the lady was lovely) questions in a very, VERY perculiar and almost offensive way... and i cant understand why they are against spaying a PET. i assumed all doberman admirers and breeders should be pushing for a stronger breed through choice breeding, not complaining or asking "why?" when i try to be responsible and enquire about spaying or neutering my pets.
i honestly did feel like giving up on finding a perfect doberman for myself, but i realised that is quite silly, i cant let one bad apple spoil the whole bunch, and everyone here has been so encouraging so im continuing to keep my chin up. thankyou to everyone, i appreciate it so much. :]

| Everything is meant to be. You will find a pup from a good, responsible breeder - and everything will be right with the world. We had to go through heartache with a rescue dog, but if it wasn't for that, we would've never got Red - and I can't imagine my life without him. He is absolutely everything I dreamed and more. So in the end, I'm glad things worked out the way they did - and you will be too.
Keep your chin up, and we will always be here for you! |
