No techniques, really... people suggested taking her out after everything she does. Eats, plays, sleeps, etc. And that's really been working. We've been taking her out about every hour, and also after everything she does.
As for the crating, it just gets easier. The first night we took her out every 2 hours, the next night, she only woke up every 4 hours. She's been waking up less and less every night. It's been less than a week and she's already sleeping 6+ hours.
Maybe we were just lucky. She doesn't even chew on her mat or anything.
