How long is too long to keep dog in crate

How many hours can I keep Trooper in the crate while I'm at work? Is six hours too long?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

how old is he? right off the cuff, six hours straight without being let out, watered, potty breaks, stretch breaks is too long.

YOu might consider having someone come over to let him out at least once, like at lunch. Have you considered alternating some days with doggy day care?

Lexx is 14 months and is occaisionally left for up to 8 hours. But only sometimes, definitely NOT everyday. and I hate doing it, but its just part of our life

My 2 stay in their crates for about 7 hrs a day during the week 5-4 days. They get play time in the yard for about an hour go in their crates around 9 and get out around 5. I know its a long time but I work about 45 mins away and my fiance doesn't get a lunch break at his job now. In 2 weeks he starts his new job and will let them out for an hour during that time. They are fine in their crates that long, after we get home they have more play time of free run a long walk and ob training.

Law is now in his crate around 7-8 hours per day and does fine. He is hyper as all get out when we get home but he does very well. When we first introduced him to the crate we did 1 hour (I ran to the grocery store) then like 2 hours and then went to 4 hours (with a friend stopping in to let him out) - then back in again for about another 3 hours.

Now with being back at work for both hubby and me - he is in there straight and is fine.

He is not crated at night though anymore (17 weeks old which I think is awesome) as he sleeps on his bed aside of our bed and he is great. Wakes me up around 3a.m .to go out and potty then we go back to bed. He keeps the dragons away at night!

Rainah stays in her crate during the day for around 7 hours. We did the same thing as Pammy... we worked up to that time... for about the first 2 months that we had her, we had a dog walker come in and take her out for a walk for a hour. We slowly pushed the time back that the dog walker came (ie, come at 12, then a week later 12:30, then a week later 1:00) until Rainah was staying in there for 7 hours without making a sound/having accidents. She still sleeps in her crate in the night time too, mostly because she won't settle on her own bed - she gets up and tries to play. Eventually she will do it, but she isn't ready for it yet.

Also, she gets a hour walk in the morning and is out of her crate for about another 2 hours in the morning before she has to go back in (we get up really early in order to do this for her) then in the evenings when I get home I walk her for at least a hour usually, or take her to an off leash dog park for playtime. We just started her at a doggy day care yesterday and we plan on putting her there maybe once a week for a play day.

Good luck!!
