Supplements & Vitamin ?

Hi ~

Wondering what type of supplements you give your Dobes? Our breeder gave us a suggested list of Calcium, Vit. C & E & Omega oil. She said the calcium was important in these fast growing Males. The day I started the calcium our puppy got VERY sick. He was vomiting around the clock for 24hrs.--it was pretty bad. I really don't think it was related to the Calcium (& either did the vet) but I'm afraid to try it again.
Also, it seems every time I go to start the oil or other vit.--he seems to have loose stools, so I hate to introduce something new, that will make that worse. (his loose stools are maybe every other day, he'll have one)
Jasper is 13 weeks today, 28lbs. & on Candidae ALS.
We have another Dobe, that is over 13 YEARS old & has never been on anything but Nurtro lamb & rice his whole life (with treats of course) but this was the only thing that really ever agreed with him. He never had vitamins, etc. It just makes me wonder if it is all really necessary- he has certainly lived a good long life.

thanks
Lisa

Suppliments aren't necessary if a good diet is being fed. And calcium should *never* be given to puppies....EVER. If a puppy shows signs of pano you can add vitamin C, but just randomly giving suppliments IMO isn't a good idea.

When is it a good idea to begin to give fish oil or yogurt or eggs? wait to see if they really need it or just wait a bit till they are settled into a routine of eating certain food and timing?

I would just wait and see if they have a particular need for something. I'm a big fan of "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

That's the way I feel, too.

When I got Baruch from the breeder he was being fed a mixture of yogurt, cottage cheese, boiled chicken liver, and cod liver oil mixed with kibble or oats. When I brought him home I mixed just cottage cheese with his kibble to ween him (because I was not going the BARF route). I feed him Innova LBP three times a day and put a cod liver oil gel cap in his food(Innova LBP) twice a day. If I put it in 3 times he has runny stools so I limit it to 2. I only supplement the cod liver oil for his coat. He is doing well.
