| Puppy Problems! OK..heres the poop...literally. I've had Sully for almost 2 weeks now, he was on Science Diet Lamb and Rice once he had come home from the breeders, and did very well as far as formed stools. Over the next week I introduced Avoderm Avocado puppy food...still fine, until about 2 days ago, when explosive diarrhea occurred. Only at night, so I figured it may be the training treats I am giving him( Solid Gold Turkey Jerky) so I have completely cut those out and have been feeding him a bland diet (boiled chicken and rice). Now no more explosiveness, but I am noticing he is voracious about eating. When he was eating the kibble, he would take a few bites and hardly eat, now with the bland diet, he is psycho about it...eats so fast he gets the hiccups, and has a hard time dealing with my hand in the bowl while he eats to the point of almost forgetting to breathe while hes inhaling it. Should I not be putting my hand in there? I dont want a food aggressive maniac on my hands....Im figuring he just plain doesnt like his kibble, so I want to try something new....I cant get the good stuff around here, and its really too expensive to order online and ship. Oh BTW, he got into the kitty litter box the day before all this and ate kitty hor deurves.....could that have been the cause of the diarrhea? And how long do I feed the bland diet for? Its been one and a half days of feedings so far. Sorry for the saga...but I figured I would try to give all the details.

| | Alpha | Whoa - what is Avoderm Avocado puppy food? I'm new to this forum (so sorry I can't help you more) but now I'm intrigued as to what that is - avocado? Maybe that with it being new to his system gave him the explosive diarrhea?
Everyone is telling me to switch gradually with the food - did you do that? Maybe that could have caused an upset tummy.... I'm sure the litter box appetizer might not have helped.
My whippet gets into our rabbitry sometimes and helps herself to some rabbit appetizers and she gets sick (yeah, I know, sounds awful)...... most of the time they are forbidden to get in there...... once in a blue moon she sneaks in behind me and I don't realize right away..... UGH. |

| I would also try feeding canned pumpkin. It stops the runs just like that. Use 1 tsp per every 10 lbs of weight and make sure you get canned pumpkin and pupkim pie mix. Pumpkin pie mix has way too much sugar.
I would not worry about putting your hands in his bowl. I actually hand fed one of my rescues for several months to establish a better bond. By putting your hand in his bowl you will not cause the dog to become food aggressive. Food aggression is a problem seen more with dogs that have starved it's a matter of they are guarding thier food.
I would be concerned about eating the food to quickly. I would divide the meal into smaller portions and work in some obedience so he doesn't inhale.

| yes I introduced the new food slowly just a handful if that at a time over about a week. Avoderm is sold at petco, and I like the ingredient list. The avocado is good for their skin. But unfortunately I am going to have to switch him out to something else because I truly believe he doesnt like it. Im hearing good things about the pro plan so Im gonna give that a go.....now I have a huge bag of science diet that I will never use...Im thinking maybe some wet food also just a little mixed in with the dry.....I will have to take a good look at them though...the wet food thing is all new to me...any suggestions on the wet? Oh and how should I introduce more obedience into feeding time? I make him sit and stay before I put the bowl down, but Im worried its making him anxious, and contributing to the whole inhaling thing.

| You might try to see if a local vet or rescue could use the Science your not gonna use. Im sure it can go to good use someplace. I wouldnt switch him back and forth from kibble to chicken its got to be one or the other. If you want to feed Raw food or chicken like that be very very very carfull and really read on it first, its not as easy as just boiling chicken and giving it to them there is a lot that goes into it. I had to switch foods (it wasnt agreeing with them) but the acted like it was the last food on earth. The minute i changed it they ate normal. No more hicups LOL "was kinda cute though" I use Diamond large bread puppie it seems to be doing good so far

| lindaH has the website on her signature I think! I would think that avacado might might a pup sick, its a very very very rich fruit.
Try adding kibble back into the chicken and rice slowly. As long as the chicken is cooked, mixed is fine

| Hmm it says avocado is an unusual ingredient for dog food because it can be toxic, but it is unknown how much of a dose is toxic. Well then...hes on the chicken and rice and yesterday was formed...but today is very very very loose again...should I reintroduce the science diet into the rice and chicken bit by bit again? Or is it too soon?

| "Fruit: banana, papaya, apple, pear, blueberries, avocado, etc. Note that avocado pits and skin are toxic to dogs. The fruit from Guatemalan avocados is also somewhat toxic, while the fruit from Mexican varieties is not. The popular Hass variety is a hybrid with some Guatemalan heritage, I'm unsure what it's level of toxicity is. See my post for further info." This is from the dogaware site, you should read it too.
About the food it looks like a toss up. You are not for sure if the avoderm is the cause. You might keep on with it to see and if your boy keeps having a problem then buy another better food. I am pretty sure that was petco dog foods that just got shut down. Can't find the thread.
It is really a toss up as to which food to feed. Really if it was me and I could afford it I would go buy another food like California Natural, Innova, Solid Gold Wolfking(last on my list)Canidae, Wellness, Proplan. |
