| | Alpha | Recommendations on puppy food I was about to purchase a nice big bag of IAM's Puppy Chow with fish oil in it today - but then thought about waiting and seeing what everyone thinks or can recommend to me.
He (LAW) is coming home Sunday so I'll need to be prepared by then. He was 18lbs at 9 weeks (maybe 10 weeks) - but I thought he was 9 weeks when I calculated it ..... I think that is a good weight at that point.
Any supplements or things I should NOT give him? Thanks so much!!!! |

| | Alpha | Do not buy the Iams! It is no longer a good food.
If you feed a good food you don't need to supplement much at all. You can over supplement very easily. Just find a good quality food. Glad you asked before you bought! |

| | Alpha | I'd get a small bag of whatever he's eating now to make a transition (if needed), but I sure wouldn't be switching to Iams!

| I recommend Purina Pro Salmon and rice, for puppies and adults. i do not believe in feeding 'puppy' Foods. Most have WAY to much protein. Our Dobies seem to do better on fish based foods than chicken, lamb etc. |

| | Alpha | She just said he is on Puppy Chow for big dogs (???) and Pedigree canned food too mixed in?
Why isn't IAMS good? I thought that was one of the "top" foods - god, they charge for it more than others. |

| Iams may be a 'good' food but I tried it once and my dogs did not like it at all. I listen to my dogs, sometimes, lol. |

| Purina Pro Plan all the way. My 18 week old is on Pro Plan puppy for Large breeds; however based on comments on this and other threads, I am considering taking him off the puppy food and putting him on adult. just about to the end of the bag, so will need to start switching soon. I have fed pro plan many years and been very happy with it. But like someone said, get a small bag of what he is on now, mix w/new for transition.
congrats on the arrival of your new baby!! |

| Hi My pup was on Iams . He quit eating it, I thought he was ill, but then on the good advice of some folks here, I switched him to pro plan all life stages, He eats it up !
I always thought Iams was one of the better food also. But not anymore, atleast not to my dogs.. |

| I think back in the day, Iams and Eukanuba both used to be considered good foods. My parents used to feed our mini-doxi Eukanuba, and you couldnt just buy it anywhere, you had to get it at the vet or specialty stores. When they started selling it at Grocery Stores, etc......I think the quality went down. My dad stopped feeding it, and home cooked for her for the rest of her life. (She lived to be almost 21)
Iams is just kind of full of junk. I don't think it always was...but it is now. I would go to a better quality food. Depending on your budget, there is Canidae, California Natural, Solid Gold, Pro Plan.... I have heard that Purina One is very similar to Pro Plan, and it is less expensive and you can get it anywhere. I don't think it is quite as good, but honestly dont know I have never fed it.
I was an avid pro plan hater (based off of ingedients) for a long time, but I am feeding it to my dogs now, and they are doing really well on it.
I agree that I would buy a small bag of what your puppy is eating right now, and mix it in with the new food you are going to feed so that it doesn't upset his stomach.
My puppies are eating Pro Plan selects Turkey and Barley and doing really well on it.
Good luck with your new puppy.
