Duke's dad is on a distinguished road
Is my pup too small ?

Hi All
My Duke is 11 mo old, I am a bit concerned about him being small , he weighs 73lbs and he's 26' tall. He's dad is a big guy (110lbs) and mom is average size female.
We try to exercise daily, he has been fed with Canidae so far, we have recently switched to Innova Evo. He is otherwise a beauty, not to mention being a sweet family dog, I just think that big Dobe males are so impressive and wanted duke to be such a boy..
is he supposed to grow further or is this it ?
Thanks
Duke's Dad

BurberryShaw will become famous soon enough
from what I understand dobermans will get to their full height in the first year, and their full body mass in their second year...so he should grow one way or another for about 13 more months. hope that helps.

Actually that's not entirely true. I've had males from some lines who were at or very close to their full height by the time they were 6-7 months old. But I've had more that didn't hit their full height until they were 18 months old. They do fill out and begin to look more mature in the the second year but most of my males have actually been closer to three before they were actually at their mature weight.

Because I show I tend to keep more weight on the dogs until they are out of the conformation ring and cut them back 3 to 5 pounds as soon as they start doing things in performance--especially if they are running agility.

The weight is appropriate for the height that you think Duke is. I've found that a lot of people don't actually measure their dogs correctly and they often are taller than the owner thinks they are. And dogs that weigh 110 pounds are more often than not fat--not just big.

Duke is still very much a puppy at 11 months--you really need to allow him to finish growing and maturing.

My dobe 13 months old, and is also a shade over 26" and weighs 65lbs despite being fed raw beef, proplan, and bill jacks combined. I can't wait until he finally does fill out. I give him perhaps too much exercise chasing tennis balls, but I certainly hope that he will be much bigger. 65lbs for a male whose father was 110lbs as in Merrick's case as well is too small.
I hope it works out for you man.

Thank you guys for your input !
I have heard that males may sometimes grow until they're 3,wow, i am curious how my Duke is going to look like ! he currently has a puppy look and puppy face which we all adore.
Do any of you have any other recommendations for diet at this age ?
Thanks

i went thru this with faber- turns out i was worrid about nothn'. he easily hit 85 and looked good. remember they aren't really suposed to be huge. More big enuff to drop a man, but fast and agile. To big isn't so good for their health or agility.

Oh heavens this is a pet peeve of mine...I don't get the obsesson with size, a Doberman is not a giant breed dog and 110 pounds is outrageous! Just think of the stress on all those joints and the heart!

Does no one read the breed standard before buying a dog? It clearly says 26-28 inches for a dog, 27.5 being ideal. If size is that important then buy a Great Dane, but don't expect a correct Doberman to look like a Great Dane!

I would guess he has a little growing to do yet. My current boy went up in height until over 2. Unless you are showing him in the breed ring it makes no difference. I've seen plenty of 26 inch dogs finish. The standard for male's is 26 to 28. Enjoy him and don't worry about it in my opinion. Canidae is one of the better foods.

lexx is 13 mo and 65-70lbs at 26.5 inches. honestly... if he gets bigger..great.. if not.. great. i love my dog and don't care how "impressive" or "huge" he is. i just want him happy and healthy

110lbs is fat for a doberman of standard size in my opinion.
