| Crate and housebreaking training I have read books and online forums to help prep me for my puppy, who is coming home tomorrow. Later today I am going to get all the appropriate things for him so that he'll be all set. However, I still have a few questions that I would like some input about from experienced owners.
1. I am a teacher and am home for the summer. All books I have read give a crate training schedule, but it looks more like it is for those that are not at home during the day. I have housebroken puppies before (albeit it was a looooong time ago) without using a crate and just by watching them for clues as to when they need to go and prevention. Should I use this prevention method for now while I am home and then switch to putting the pup in the crate when I'm not around or busy, or just stick him in the crate and follow a schedule even though I am home?
2. Our house is a 2 story house. I have read that for the first night, the crate should be near where we sleep so the pup can hear/see us. I have no problem putting the crate in our bedroom, but should it stay there at all times, or do I bring it downstairs during the day when the pup will be spending most of his time on the first floor?
3. Our pup has only has his first shots and is a little over 7 weeks old. I am very concerned about getting him the proper socialization, but I also want him to stay healthy. Is it okay for the first month home to have trusted friends and their pets over for a visit? Is it safe to take him out anywhere on a leash right now, so should I wait until after 2nd shots? What if I carry him?
4. At what age is it okay to start taking him for walks?
Thanks again for any advice you can give me. |
