Neutering?

I see almost everyone says that you need to neuter your males. And that is "unacceptable" as i quote another post i read to not neuter your dog...

Whats this about? What if i want to use my dog as a stud?

What are the cons of not doing it?

Excuse my ignorance i don't mean to start something i just am not familiar with why this is, this is my first Doberman and my father is a world renowned hunting dog trainer/breeder and none of his dogs were neutered weather they were used for studs or not....

Thanks in advance for the help! Just trying to decide what to do...

I'm sure there are many pro's for neutering.
But, we aren't the norm, and have an almost 3 yr. old unneutered dog with no plans of neutering. Our puppy is almost 7 months and we will probably neuter him around 18 months but only because he has an undescended testicle which could become cancerous in time otherwise I probably wouldn't neuter him if I didn't have any issues.
We were just at the vet and he asked me why I haven't neutered my older dog like I automatically should do so. I told him he doesn't hump, he's healthy as a horse and he doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body so I don't see a need. The vet had no response and only said the only positive thing would be you wouldn't have to worry about him getting another dog pregnant if he got loose. But, I'm not worried about that happening.
It's up to you.

Yeah see, thats my take on it, i don't see the need to, if he starts humping things then yeah ill do it, but i wouldn't mind using him as a stud dog if anyone happened to act interested in the future or what not... and if hes neutered well then thats not possible.

I just keep reading people saying thats its crazy to not do it, i don't see the big deal?

First welcome to DT!
How will you know or prove that Bowser is stud worthy?

Prostate disease is VERY common in male dobermans. It can be extremely painful for the dog and also extremely difficult to treat.

Neutering removes that risk factor. That's certainly reason enough for me.

Yep for me too! I neutered my male Arthur and feel it was the best thing to do for him and me.

I don't pretend to be an expert on this in the slightest (nor on anything except James Bond ) and I'm sure you'll get many far more knowledgeable replies than this but there seem to be some areas of consensus, such as:

- Behavioural issues. Some male Dobes' behavioural issues improve if you lop their balls off. I think if I were a male Dobie and someone cut mine off I'd behave perfectly too, you never know what they might take next...

- Responsible breeding. Many here are very concerned about this. Breeding is a complex process these days and may feel the hit and miss 'oh maybe I'll breed from him, we'll see' attitude does not contribute a sincere effort to helping and improving the breed, in their eyes pretty much the only reason to do it. Having no balls automatically protects against the possibility of random productive one-night-stands.

- As already mentioned, the health issue, for both prostate and testicular cancer.

I'm sure there are many other pros and cons but from what I can work out, those are the main reasons.

I could be wrong but neutering doesnt help grow in size....simply helps remove the risk of disease and helps with the temperment..leroy is getting it done very soon!!
