| | Lil Dog | Nail Trimming - What do you think? Take a look at this and tell me if you think they are still too long.
I sort of let them go for 3 weeks this time, probably too long.
She didn't like the dremel at all, even with treats.
But it didn't bleed with that. Was i still hitting quick maybe even thoug it didn't bleed?
So when I used the clipperes , she put up with it better even when it would bleed on a few.
I saw on one post you need to do the dremel every three days to get the quick to recess. ? |

| If it does not bleed, then you didn't hit the quick
One of the things you have to watch with a dremel is that it can heat up if you keep it in one spot more than just a few seconds and that can cause discomfort. I keep the dremel moving and keep rounding the nail back and forth and up and down so that it does not get too hot.
They still look pretty long - but trust me, I have seen longer! Saw some real talons at the rescue picnic yesterday!

| they still look long but definitely not terrible. As velma said, the dremmel gets hot, you just really have to take it slow, don't expect her to take to it right away. Its taken lexx almost 8 months to be really good about it.
goodluck!

| Dobermans in the show ring have excessively short nails for cosmetic purposes, which isn't necessary if they aren't being shown. My rule of thumb though is that if you can hear those nails when they walk on a hard floor they are too long. The pictured nails are still too long to not "tick" on the hard floor when walking, so I would still work on getting them a little shorter. (which will be extremely hard without a dremel)

| Any time they bleed you got the quick which hurts so next time the dog/pup will like it less & less. They have large nail clipers out now up to 75# has a sensor green cut, yellow be cautious & Red do not cut anymore off. Saw them in a catalog today all black nails are hard to do anyway. If not experinced you might try the above nail clippers until you get used to doing them.? I want to get the Peticure and try it out on my Fur Kids just have to pay of a bill or two first. |

| Yeah they are a little long but still they are pretty good.
I would just shave off the nail with clippers before i knew you could dremmel nails.
I would look from the bottom of the foot and usually you can see where the tissue-y area is you take off the tip.
Then I like to clip on either side of the nail and then slowly shave away until you feel a spongy area.
I have never, knock on wood, hit a quick.
Hope that helps, it all comes with practice, just make sure when you are clipping that you arent nervous, I find it easiest to have them laying on a couch so they are laying on their sides and comfy. |

| now I am going from my memory....that can me foggy from time to time. but from what I recall.....if a dogs nails have grown longer the quick also grows longer with the nail. so it can take awhile to get them back to the short. I recall being told to just take a little off each week....trying to get a bit further back without hitting the quick. once I got right next to the quick it would also shrink back.allowing me to cut more the next time. but I am pretty sure you cant go from way long to show short. it takes time for the quick to withdraw. |

| If a few nails bled, you are going too short and your poor puppy will hate having her nails done - it hurts! Just trim the very tips off until you get used to how much you can trim off. Better yet - have your vet give you a nail trimming demo and show you how close you can get without hitting the quick.
It's very important not to go too short when you are training the pup to sit for nail trimmings, because the puppy is going to anticipate pain every time you do it if you are trimming too short and you'll have a harder time getting her to sit well for it. |

| | Lil Dog | ok The heating up thing is something I didn't think about.
I might just hit them again with dremel at end of week. If i just touch each on for about 4-5 seconds she will probably put up with it. |
