Question First time Mom-8 weeks old puppy skin itchy and scratch a lot. Help!

Hi there,

Just got my baby puppy two days ago and it's my first dobie! I am very proud to be a doberman mom!

My baby is 8 weeks old and he scratches a lot. When he sits there, he just lifts his feet and starts scratching. He also licks himeself a lot.

The first day he came home, we gave him a bath. I also notice there are a lot of small white spots (flakes?) on his coat. More starts to come out as he scratches.

I am not sure why he does this. Maybe his food? his blanket? or he needs treatment?

I am feeding him Purina puppy chow. Some related/unrelated questions I have:

1. Is there a better brand or better food I should give to him? What are your recommendations?
2. How much I should feed him? How many times a day?
3. Should I give hime some fish oil, or???
4. What could be the possible cause for him to itch and scratch himself?

Thank you!!!!

Welcome and congrats on your new baby.

I think food is probably a good place to start with his scratching and licking, even though there are many other possibilities.

The difference in diets on the market are like night and day, so you're off to a good start by asking.
Here's a good link (although lengthy) with a ton of info on nutrition for your new baby and dogs in general.
Food for your Dobe

Do you have any photos of your new family addition to share?

A lot of Dobe pups seem to have allergic type reactions to the Purina Puppy chow. Your pup needs to go on a food with less wheat and corn in it. Look for a more Natural food with Meat being the main ingredient. Depends on how much you can afford, the quality dog foods are more expensive that the puppy chow.
Bathing your pup will not improve the dry flakey skin. Everytime you bath the pup you are washing off the natural oils witch protect the skin and hair. You could give your pup a fish oil capsule once a day too.
We await pictures of your pup!!!

Thanks JanS! I checked out the link you sent to me, but most discussions are around young or adult dogs. Where can I find more info on puppy? He is only 8 weeks old. It is my first time owning a doberman. So I really need to learn everything.

DLS, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I will definitely want to switch to better food. Anything you can recommend for my 8 weeks old pup?

Not yet. Just brought him home on Monday. I am still searching for a good vet in the area. Anyone has recommendations for a good vet near San Jose, CA?

Welcome to DT!
I would recommend getting you pup to a vet and letting him get settled in before you go changing his food.
There are a few skin parasites that can look like dandruff - Cheyletiella, Lice, etc. which can also be itchy.
Also, I have seen many people on here w/ new pups trying to change over foods too quickly and end up w/ diarrhea. I would give him some time to get adjusted, then make a very gradual change (over 2 weeks) Good luck w/ your boy!

i can't help ya with the vet, but i can help you with your pup (i hope) i had the same problem when i brought my pup home about 2 months ago. he was on puppy chow. and he also itched and had dry skin too. i switched him over to solid gold wolf cub formula. he really loves it. it seems to have helped alot with the itching and dry skin. he coat has started to realllly shine ever since i finished off the puppy chow and i am now completely on the solid gold. also, did you use human shampoo on the dog? and i give zeus a fish oil capsule once a week and a raw egg with his food once a week. but thats just me. hope i was of some help!

Congrats on your new puppy. A trip to the vet would be the first thing. Check out this website to compare foods Dog Food Reviews - Main Index - Powered by ReviewPost Linda H has this in her signature and it is a wonderful site. My first thought on his itchy skin would be Cheyletiella also. Good luck!

Fish oil capsule? Where do you buy them from? Are they specifically for dogs or are you using the human capsules? Does it make a difference?

Wow, there are so many choices in different food brands....I don't even know which one to try first....

Also, how much should I feed him? I am now giving him one cup/feeding and 3 feedings a day. Is that too little or too much? How do I tell by looking/feeling him?

i feed my guy based on the food bag. they have a chart for size/age/how much food to feed. and mackadelick i give him human fish oil capsules, i get mine at the local health food store. i'm not sure if they have them in pet stores or holistic pet stores but thats where i get mine. and yes there are MANY good food for your dog. try what one really appeals to you. and see how he does.
