Lightbulb why to buy a doberman, instead of a GSD?

Hi everyone. I have a german shepherd and probably I'm planning to get another puppy. I really like to have dobie. But, I don't know how different they are from shepherds. Shepherds are really brainy dogs, very easy to train, smart, can do everything to please you. How about dobermans? Is there anyone here who has experience about both breeds?. I'm gathering information, I also got some information from germanshepherd froum, so what do you dober people think? Thank you so much.

From what I have heard German's are much more solitary perimiter protection dogs while Dobes were bred for personal protection. They are like velcro. My breeder was telling me the other day that a main reason why GSD are more popular than dobes for many police departments in the states is that they are awful kennel dogs while GSD's do much better. They also tolerate climate extremes better than dobes.

If you want the best of BOTH worlds, get a Dobe. If you want all of the characteristics that you just described plus a dog that will truly be a companion and friend, the Dobe is the only way to go. Dobes are incredible working dogs and have all of the important traits that you desire in your GSD. Dobe's love their families too and absolutely have to be with them. If you aren't into alot of affection and into devoting a lot of attention, then please don't get a Dobe. The Dobe will be miserable if it isn't a part of the family and is relegated to doing ONLY work. They are unique dogs and can suffer tremendously if their genetic traits are not understood and respected. Its great that you care and are asking ahead of time.

If you do get a Dobe, you will not find a better place to find information, support and friends.

OH, and if you have a male GSD, get a female Dobe...and the opposite as well (female GSD- male Dobe) Dobes do not do well together with other dogs of same sex, ESPECIALLY males.

I had a female GSD and they are indeed awesome dogs. I think their only downfall is the hair. lol. I can't really think of any huge differences in their mentality or trainability, although I must say that my dobe is more suspicious of people where as my girl didn't know a stranger. lol, everyone was her friend. Just don't mix 2 males in the same household. That's the only thing I can think of to advise against. Both are easy to train, high energy and have high drives - I think that if you can handle a GSD, you can handle a Dobe.

How old is your GSD? Are you looking for a companion Dobe or are you looking to do other work with it - schutzhund/ obedience/tracking/agility...

What do you plan on doing with your dogs? I have both currently. Both have qualities I like and both have qualities I don't like. If you can give me more info on what your lifestyle is, I can give you examples of where one might exell and one might not.

That's exactly right! I had GSD for many, many years before I had dobermans.

I think the best description of the difference between the two was made in an interview in an old doberman magazine. I'm paraphrasing here, but the comment was something like the GSD was the good soldier, who'd jump through a ring of fire if it's owner asked it to. The rottie didn't want to be in the army. And the doberman was the crazy one...LOL.

Seriously-I think a GSD is far more forgiving of handler errors, , not as quirky in training and generally a bit more mentally durable-they can be brought back from abuse situations that would ruin many if not most dobermans.

The big problem I can see is it's hard to find a good GSD anymore, due to the rampant overbreeding for so many years. And...the hair!

Shepherds are year around shedders as I am sure you know. They do blow coat 2x a yr in large amounts as a double coated breed they also shed all year around. My female was brushed daily with a furminator and there was never a moment it would not pull up a ball of hair in one swipe.

Shepherds however are much better equipped to deal with cold both living and working in it as long as properly acclimated to it. Shepherds pant at temps a dobe does not and the panting at 70 can be distressing to the owner who worries about overheating.

Dobes take up less room for the same height or weight. They sleep in balls like a cat and since I use a dog as a service dog space is a factor when the dog has to be out of sight out of the way in resturants etc.

Shepherds are wired more to work independently but any well trained dobe can also be taught to go out to do a task. Shepherds I am told will live happily in the yard where dobes want to be with you 24/7, personally my shepherd was the same way. She was happy to lay in the floor on her bed or in her crate (likely because of the hair and body heat) where the dobe I have has to be touching me with some part of his body at at all times. The shepherd would lay beside me but he lays on me, gives a new view of a body pillow.

Both are intellegent dogs but
shepherds mature faster at least in my experience. My shepherd was off leash reliable by a year old under heavy distraction, my male dobe... not so much. My shepherd was housebroken early by 5mths she was 100%. Some of this may be gender related too so someone else may want to jump in with whether that may be part of it. Shepherd was female dobe is male.

My shepherd naturally 'toted' toys around, dobes eat them. I think in another thread someone said 4-5mths was the general cut off age for stuffies before they were shreaded on site lol.

Both dogs are smart but dobes bore faster and you have to keep on your toes to keep ahead of them. Both need exercise but my shepherd was less distructive or bored than my dobe is if he doesnt get regular walks and run time. Shepherds tend to be less demanding of routine and more tolerant of our human errors. If we don't take them out jogging every day thats usually ok with them (some are high drive) dobes need to do something. If the shepherd moto was 'sure what ever you want, I'm game!' then the dobe moto would be 'JUST DO IT!'

What you may want to do is consider fostering a dobe for a rescue so you can see more of the small personality differences. Visit a rescue and volunteer to be a dog walker so you can get to know several dogs because like diamonds, every one is a little different.

Oh and you can freshen up a dobe for unexpected company with a wet wash wrag LOL

Below is something you would never see with my dobe
