| | Big Dog | Getting you're pup to follow you off leash? hey guys,
when i was alot younger i had a golden retriever, as a pup, (8weeks old when we got her), i was with her all the time, i could trust her to go off leash and walk around in the woods, parks, etc and she'd never run away from me, if she started chasing a squirrell or something, well i never taught her come, but i would yell "bye maggie!" and act like i was walking away, and she'd start yelping and run to me as fast as she could,
now that was sooo long ago.. lol is there a certain way to have you're doby be like this, without pure luck like i had in the past with maggie? |

| lexx followed me when he was little, he wouldn't leave my side, now however, i don't trust him as much because he has prey drive and hormones. If i'm away from people and cars, like back in the woods, he can go off leash, but nowhere where he might get hurt if he decided not to listen.

| | Alpha | Very young puppies will follow you, it is in their nature, however, it is also in their nature to explore and become more independent as they hit the next stage which isn't far behind. I would err on the side of caution and keep puppy leashed, it is good for him to learn to be good on a leash from a young age. A Dobe is far from a Golden. Most Dobes have high prey drive and they also hit a stage where they test rules and boundaries. Keep your puppy on leash if not in a securely fenced in area, get a long leash. Take your puppy to obedience classes. Training at the off leash level, especially among many distractions, will come much later. Better safe than sorry, as one time of puppy not properly recalling or a second of distraction on your part that could be disastrous or fatal.

| | Big Dog | thanks for the quick replies guys, , i will try and do some obedience classes with my pup asap, but i may not beable too, luckily for me ive been to several obedience classes before for former dogs, and know a little more then the basic commands, (sit, down, stay, come, "release", "drop it", and probobly the not best command but "get the kitty" was not a real cat, basically go into search mode at anytime i say that, ) and yeah i know dobys are nothing like goldens, luckily for me, my mom's boyfreind has had dobys all his life, so if i run into any issues hes there, plus you guys are here, haha |

| Get your pup neutered or spayed eventually. Spend lots of time with him/her so they love you. Then walk the dog around your property on leash. If you don't have a fair amount of land, be real careful, you don't want the dog hit by a car. When the dog gets older you can use a mild shock collar, but do obedience classes first up to Dog II. PM me for more information.
Sincerely,
Scoob |
