Pockets in ears?

hey all, i have been looking around but cant seem to find what exactly is/how a "pocket" happens to a pup whose been cropped and is now being posted? can someone explain to me?

When we brought Lukas home at 12 weeks, we took him out of his posts because we thought his breeder used too much tape. So before we re-posted we took some pictures.

The green circles mark the pockets. From what I understand, pockets form when the base of the ear isn't strong enough to hold up the rest of the ear. That area of ear sinks in causing a "pocket" which in turns causes the ears to fall into each other.

To correct it, you'll have to stick something in the pocket to pop it out and post as usual. It's just an area that needs increased support or its due to incorrect postings.

I think ReDobie's pic is excellent but would say that the pocket is more noticable from the back. Like if you pored water on their head it would hold water in the fold by the ear. Well not really but hope that explains it.

Also pushing from inside of ear outward at base, it seems to snap back into place, at least that's how i noticed it.

I thickened post up at base and kept stretching ear up when taping and it seemed to work for me.
