Hi welcome to DT. Congrats on the upcoming puppy! Normally a good breeder has the ears done for you at around 7-8 weeks old and then sends the puppy home when the stitches come out and ears are posted at around 9 weeks old. Doing it on your own, you will have to be very careful to look for a good cropping vet, they are far and few in between. The closest one to you is down in NJ. We have had a bunch of new comers lately who's dogs got really bad crops by vets that have been cropping a long time. Just because they have done a 1000 crops does not mean that they know how to do a good one. Natural ears are so much better looking then a bad crop.

Good luck....if you want the name of the vet in NJ...I will find out for you and PM you with her number.

Carol & Petey!

Hi and welcome to DobermanTalk. You really need to use a DOBERMAN experienced ear crop vet. The only two I know that are around your area are Sophia Koster in New Jersey and Sam Grant in Ohio. Good luck. It's WELL WORTH the drive!

I think Sophia would be a lot closer than Sam Grant. She's a really good ear crop vet, I would highly recommend her.

Sophia Koster DVM is certainly one of the best croppers on the east coast, but you do need to be aware of the work that goes into after care of a cropped ear in order to get those beautiful standing ears. There is nothing wrong with leaving ears natural - especially if the breeder is not doing this service for you.

Sophia has a website - you might want to check it out.
