| Hills and Royal Canin are not considered the top foods here in the USA.
Hills has a prescription food sold through vet offices for kidney diet, liver diet, etc.
I think most serious dog people do not like the ingredients in their food and can find a better source.
I think the top foods vary by region of the country; here in the South we feed Taste of the Wild, Pinnacle, Nature's Variety, EVO, Wellness Core and probably a few I forgot to mention.
It seems a lot of DT people have found Purina Pro Plan to be a good kibble for their dogs. It seems to work for a lot of Dobes with sensitive digestive tracts! I've never fed it though. |

| Honestly...sad to say... but by asking our customers at the animal hospital I work at what they feed, I would have to say pedigree/beneful / and old roy. I think the tide is turning and more and more people are becoming aware of the better food and better ingredents but good organic food is still not the most popular.
I feed California Natural and Merricks

| I would say the most popular food is probably one that Wal-Mart carries. Everytime I go, I seem to see people buying Purina Dog Chow or Beneful. It seems most of my friends and co-workers feed IAMS. We tried different foods but our boy Higgins LOVES his Pro Plan and it keeps his poops solid and healthy. It seems like Pro Plan is definetely the most poplular here on DT. |

| I would agree- most pet owners will not spend the money on dog food that a lot of us do, and just buy the cheapest thing they can find. Whatever WalMart or the Grocery store carries. I would bet that the most popular kind of food would be Purina Dog Chow. But I do agree also that more people seem to be becoming aware that there is a big difference between the different foods. My mom always fed Ol Roy or Kibbles N Bits to our dogs growing up. I just got her to switch to Purina Pro Plan.

Whatever WalMart or the Grocery store carries. I would bet that the most popular kind of food would be Purina Dog Chow. | As a kid, I remember climbing on pallets of pet food at the front of the store by the checkouts. The most vivid memory was giant bags of Purina Dog Chow (green bag) and Purina Puppy Chow (light blue bag). There were probably some other types but not as brightly coloured as these and probably didn't interest me as much, so I dont' remember the brands. But this was the type of food everyone fed back then. We fed our cocker spaniel Purina puppy chow, and then dog chow, I remember the colours! I was too young then to know how to read!
I can read now though and I researched dog food for a long time before bringing my puppy home. After deciding that raw might be too much of a challenge at this time, I settled on Orijen. The cost is roughly $2/pound before tax, and the largest size - a 30 lb bag lasts almost (not quite) a month. It's expensive, but I could never cheap-out on my boy's nutrition and I don't mind going out of my way to a shop at a store that sells this food.
I compare feeding Ol'Roy to a puppy with feeding a kid a diet of nothing but Kraft Dinner and bologna sandwiches on white bread. I think that it's not only the low cost of this "Wal-mart food", but also the sheer convenience of that one-stop shop. To be honest, I hate going into Wal-mart... not because I'm against the big box per se... but I just can't stand shopping in there! (Even though it's only a 2 minute drive from where I live). Our Wal-mart is way too small to support the number of people in Victoria that shop there. It's freakin' stressful in there! I avoid at all costs! |
