I love nosework and wish it was available here. I thought the dog would be kept onleash and you would start to learn what their default indication signal would be.

What would I do without them?

Scent work is a lot of fun! Good luck with your pup. Watch for that moment when it all come together and you know that they get it! I call hit the head check! They go past the package and all of a sudden their head swings around like its on a string and you just KNOW they get it! I have trained a lot of bomb dogs over the years and that moment never gets tired for me! Enjoy it!

Good luck with it. I have been working training in nosework for a little over 18 months (accounting for no training and rain), and I love it. mfkelly66, I agree - that head whip is pretty awesome to see, and I don't get tired of seeing it.

We did some off leash work in the beginning also, maybe not week 3, but on and off beginning early on. The only thing I have to note for you is that, when you are beginning, it is important that they get the reward nearly immediately so that the drive keeps building and it also creates the quick look back to you (looking for reward) when you start to get an true indicator (look back, sit, whatever it is for you). With more "excitable" dogs, being too far away also allows for bad habits to start (ask me how I know this) like tearing up boxes or pawing or picking up the odors. These behaviors can be hard to break, since it can be a fine line between driven and destructive. These behaviors are faults in trials. Just some friendly comments.

That being said, looks like a lot of fun and glad you are in the sport. It is one that can be lifelong for you and the dog. I don't get to see a lot of dobies work at it, but when I do they are awesome!
