| where can I find toys for an intelligent Doberman My dog Josh is an intelligent guy. He has been getting himself into trouble this week. He tore up an HDMI cable, two remotes, and a couple of other things. What I would like to do is find him a toy or two that I can give him only when I leave. He likes to do things that make him think he is definetly a working dog mentallity. That way I'm hoping some of this relapsed behavior can be controlled. I'm also going to start walking/jogging with him again and do some refresher training. Been busy the last 8 months and I think some of this behavior is pent up frustration.
I look forward to the recommendations. |

| If he is tearing things up while you aren't home I suggest crating him.
Also stuffed Frozen Kongs will keep dogs busy for a while.
Food balls (you can find these anywhere, petsmart and the like) will make him work for his meals

| crate, crate, crate. there is no reason the dog should have access to these things when you're not around to supervise. |

| He cannot be crated. We did the crate for 3 months. Every time we would leave and come back he would pee all over it, and poop as well. I got him from rescue at about a year old and they had issues with him in a crate as well.
Here is the start to finish story on the crate. When I got him I had a wire crate. He started peeing out the openings. I asked rescue about this and they said get a travel type crate that's more enclosed. I bought one. Didn't work. He would pee out the door and cry and scratch and bend the door out. After 3 months of cleaning pee and poop out of a crate and bathing him my wife said leave him out of it and see how he does.
Didnt have anymore panic attacks like he did with the crate. Every once in awhile I will find he lifts his leg on something but its better than having him anxiety crazy and pooping and peeing all over himself.
Its not like he is by himself long periods. My wife leaves for work at 7:15-7:30 and is usually home by 1-2 pm. He just cannot stand being crated. One of the homes in rescue had kept him in garage in a crate which had a frame built around it to stop him peeing. They claim he stopped at one point which I found later to be B.S. he was living with some other after them who had a farm with a big pen where he stayed at before I got him. He was outside during day and inside at night. This is because they couldn't keep him crated so they switched homes.
He is 100% better than he was 2 years ago but still is a work in progress. He should get more sense with age.

| at the very least, restrain him to one room where he *can't* get at any of the things he tends to destroy. you DO NOT want to deal with obstruction surgery. |

| | Agility Addict | Can you use a puppy pen to confine him to a laundry room or something? I use one to keep Elsie confined to the laundry when we are out, so she has room to move around without.setting the alarms off in the house. You can get tall puppy pens if you think jumping could be an issue. As for toys, my dig is destructive so can only have things like kongs stuffed with food...

| Use baby gates to one specific area where he had no access to things that can harm him (or that he can harm) . Or if he doesn't do baby gates, try something like an ex pen to keep him secure. He really shouldnt be left out in the house when unsupervised, he is the same as a small child

| I would agree with the above, restrict his "free area" if he can't be crated.
