We trialed this past weekend at the Cascade Schutzhund Club, in Olympia, WA. It was a good experience. First time on a strange field with a strange helper, and lousy conditions. I knew we had a number of situations which were not secure. I figured it would be a good chance to see exactly where we were at even though realistically felt we were about 3 or 4 months out before being able to feel somewhat comfortable going into a trial.

I had been having a few issues with her blowing me off in tracking. Other areas that were not secure included the retrieves, the stand and the send out in ob. In protection we just started doing transports (side and back) a week ago.

In the trial she had a lousy start in tracking, and required 2 extra commands to get going (she had lost 8 points before even getting started). Once she did she had an almost flawless track for a 91. In OB she blew the long down (I guess that was not as secure as we thought), though the retrieves and motion were all rated very good to excellent. Heeling exercises were all rated excellent.

We got to work on the field the day before and we had a difficult time with blind searches. I thought we finally had them fixed. I also thought we had the send out down. On the day of the trial there had been so much rain the middle of the field was a lake so the field was rearranged. On the send out she went to the side blind. I felt good about the 84 we got in OB since the blown long down and missing much of the points on the send out. In protection she went to the first blind, on the second blind she went to the wrong blind and then headed toward the bark blind. We ended up with 88 in spite of the blown blind search and a flawed back half side transport to finish. I felt good with a 263 score. Especially since I trialed under Lance, which I had never had the opportunity to do, and knew he would not be very forgiving to a club member of his.

Of the 5 IPO entries only 2 passed. Cairo was high in protection with an 88. Not bad for a Dobermann in crappy conditions with all GSD's.We also did not get to see the helper until the actual trial. I had a little apprehension since both our club helpers are under 5'7 and the trial helper was 6'7. That part was fabulous fortunately. I just wish I had video.

Congrats!! I was just about to ask if you had any video until I saw the last sentence. Bummer, sounds like a good performance outside of the troublesome areas.

I thought it was being taped. A club member went along and brought his video camera. He misunderstood me in the morning when I told him to not bother taping tracking. He thought I meant not to tape any of the trial. One other club member's wife took pics but the weather was so terrible none of the pics turned out well.

Me too. I made a couple of small errors but overall I think the best handling I have done in a trial. I felt more conscious of what I was doing, more deliberate, and a lot smoother.

Thanks, Eli. Planning on April for our first club trial of the year. This trial was mainly to find out where we were at and "hopefully" get another event out of the way on the way to competition. I am excited about competing this coming year with her.
