First obedience trial

Next weekend is our first obedience trial, for our BN title. I have been to some conformation shows but have only been to one obedience one, and that was recently. I have been in the ring before, but not for this and I'm nervous. We have not been training long (a few weeks), and he knows it all but can be a pain when he wants.

Any tips for someone just starting out?

Remember to breath! Also, don't forget to do what the signs say on the heeling. Also, if he screws up, it's not the end of the world. Ilka's first ever score was an NQ in BN, and Lucky's ONLY score ever was an NQ in BN. I still love them.

Good luck Our local breed clubs normally hold competitive obedience and it looks like great fun.

How fun! I agree with Rosemary - remember to breath. I tend to get really stressed out before competition so have to make a very conscious effort to breath and try to smile and not pass my stress on to Lucy. Many people suggest eating a breath mint before you go in the ring, because dogs can apparently smell our stress through our breath, and the breath mint helps to hide that. So I keep a roll of mints in my training bag so they are handy.

Another suggestion would be trying to figure our what is the right amount of warm up for Thor before you go in the ring. For example, I have found that if I work Lucy too much before we go in the ring she gets bored and looses her energy and enthusiasm before we have even entered. However, if I don't do enough, she might not be in working mode. It's been a hard balance for us to figure out. It seems to work best for us if I do a little training when we first arrive at the show site/ring so she understands we are there "to work", then put her away in her crate and let her rest (and me try to de-stress! LOL) then I pull her out shortly before our turn (1-2 dogs ahead) and do quick fast paced warm up during the dog before us. Then we are ready to roll at the gate just as that dog is exiting. But every dog is different...

Also, do you have a ring where you train that you can practice ring entrances? I have also found that to be important for us - the more focused and engaged she is right as we enter the ring and do that first halt in heel position where the judge is, the better things usually go for us.

Good luck!! And most importantly, have fun!

Rosemary, I will still love him, even if he never gets another title. He is my mama's boy.

Jamie, my DH should be able to film it, or as a last resort, my daughter. She can, but I've seen videos she has made on her iPod, they make you dizzy.

HarvestMoon, mints are a great idea. The first him I went into the ring for conformation, my knees were shaking and I was terrified. Hopefully this won't be as nerve-wracking. My trainer says the same thing about practice before entering the ring, your time table sounds good, I think I'm going to steal it. We have gone through the whole exercise in class, and entering the ring too, so that should help.

Thanks for all the luck too, I'm going to need it!!

Just make sure that the mint is completely gone by the time you step in the ring. You don't want to be excused for "taking food into the ring". Remember, no food of any kind in you mouth, hands, or pockets is allowed once you are in the ring.

I went in a confirmation ring before an OB one, back in the late 1970's.
I was not a good handler in confirmation, my nerves got to me (big time) and my girl was therefore not comfortable.

On the other hand, I enjoyed OB very much, and I felt the owner handler had a fair chance of doing well, less biased judging favouring the pros.
So my mindset was stronger in OB, and I didn't basically DQ myself before we even started...LOL.
Go in with the idea of only getting a passing score, not the goal of a ribbon at first...take the pressure off yourself.

^^^^ Once I did this one weekend, my dobe and I had a great time, and to my surprise 2 ribbons did come...but I wasn't expecting it, nore my goal.
Plus I warnup very little at ring side, home or the club, is where the homework is done...and kept my dog much more relaxed.
I go to a weekend show and don't even have a crate with me, girl on a leash and she loved meeting many people all day and we visited the vendors....just like going to a fun pet expo. Then when we are called, we line up and game on.

Nynaeve - good luck & have fun you to....please post photos &/or video, when back.

Ooo, thanks Rosemary, I can see myself doing that. No mint in the ring!!

Beaumont, getting a qualifying score(s) is all I hope for. Luckily, he loves the ring, and is usually better there than practice. The ring equals food for him, he will do anything for food. I plan on warming up before with chicken and cheese, and treats for after too!

I'll let you guys know how it goes, with pics and/or video.

Good luck and have fun! Try not to be nervous as it is only a dog show and there will be many, many more. An NQ is not the end of the world.

Practice doing the entire routine, then take a break for a treat if he expects food every second you train. He will wonder what is wrong at the trial if he does not get a treat after "exercise finished" is called.

I make a deal out of praise after exercises are finished and mix up when/if treats or toy are offered while working for practice after they are show ready. The treats/toys are in an obvious place and we take a break and get a treat or play, then go on to work on something else. (When training, I can hide a small toy in a pocket but the treat they can smell.)

Let DT know how it went!

A little late with this thought, but here goes.

A dog trial just lets you know what you are doing right, what may need more work or perhaps what is broken--nothing more and nothing less.

You learn more from what your training faults may be than a perfect run. (no matter what the venue may be)

The placement or qualifying ribbon is just icing on the cake. Have fun.

Not too late! Trial starts Saturday.

I'm more nervous now, Thor was really bad in class last night. You'd have thought I never taught him how to sit.

Wait, you mean you're supposed to teach them to sit? I thought obedience dogs were born trained.

Seriously, just plan on having fun with him. I mean, he can't be as bad as this. Ilka at GSDC of Beaumont, 6-16-12 - YouTube And that was a Q.

We did ok today. Didn't qualify, Thor was lagging through the heeling part (though he did stay pretty much with me) and had his nose to the ground the entire time. The rest of it was pretty good though, we would have qualified if not for the sucky heeling. His recall, sit stay and sit for exam were pretty good, figure 8 was passable but could have been better.

2 more days still to try, hopefully he will not act like a tracking dog again. It was fun, plus I did not trip and fall, nor did Thor run around the ring like a nut on the off leash recall, or pee on anything while in the ring. Success!!

Seriously, just plan on having fun with him. I mean, he can't be as bad as this. Ilka at GSDC of Beaumont, 6-16-12 - YouTube And that was a Q.
Nice job!! Lol, she was so happy that she got some snacks while in the ring. What a good girl, her tail was wagging the whole time. I want to try Rally, I'm scared to talk in the ring too much, I was worried I would give a second command when I wasn't supposed to. I love that you can clap and say as many command as you want in Rally!

Hah! Ilka has both run around the ring like a maniac and peed in the ring. Not in the same class, but still....

Best of luck in the next 2. Baron actually passed his CDX with sucky heeling but did everything else right. Remember to breath!
