Those of you who have competed in tracking or IPO, what's your lead up to the trial like? A week out? The day before? On the day?

Back from our giant 2 week road trip, which included the tracking & working trials seminar... We had so much fun! Here is a summary of our weekend!

Friday
5am - we got on the road, then onto a ferry, then onto another road... Had a stop off in the capital for a few hours and walked up a hill, then did a little more driving!
6pm - arrived at the seminar site, it was SO beautiful! Set in the base of a mountain range covered in native forest and criss crossed by icy cold streams.
From 8.30pm - got split into our teams and did introductions and team bonding stuff, then I went to bed at about 10pm (passed out as soon as my head was on the pillow lol). There were about 40 handlers present, most of the dogs were GSDs, lots of border collies, quite a few malinois and the rest of the dogs were a ragtag bunch including Elsie, a saluki, two bearded collies and an Elkhound!

Saturday
6am - Got up, showered, dogs all toileted and fed, we ate breakfast
7.30am - Out to lay tracks in our levels, there were 5 dogs in our group all up (2 GSDs, 1 BC, 1 Mal & Elsie), all at the level of just started competing in tracking or very close to starting competing. We all had various things to work on, did a lot of article indication work, line-handling for us newer handlers and as Elsie has a competition soon we did some mock trial work.
11am - watched some puppy track demonstrations, practiced fence crossings and new handlers had turns tracking with experience dogs to get an idea of how an experienced dog tracks.
12- lunch!
12.30 - UD track laying workshop
1pm - team competitions including recall, heel, drop on recall and sendaway competition, and a competition where a 20x20m square was laid out with a team around each square, and lots of articles were placed randomly about (toys, carpet squares, bits of rubber, small pine cones) and points were awarded for the retrieves. Elsie did really well and picked up a toy on her first go, and a small piece of carpet on her second turn!
2-3pm - free time! had about 15 crazy working dogs swimming in the creek! Sticks and balls flying and being fetched every where and no scuffles
3pm - more tracks out on the farms, and we had to draw up a UD track to submit based on the paddock we were working in.
5.30pm - jumps practice, sendaways, dog measuring and down time!
7.30pm - dinner!
From 8pm- Night track! This was SO MUCH FUN! Each team gets a "rabbit" (person) to track, the rabbit has 100 cloth articles to lay along their track as they go all over the hills and farmland at the base of the mountains. Handlers all walk in a single file line with their dogs, with the lead dog tracking, once the lead dog has found an article they go to the back of the line and the next dog takes over, tracking from that article to the next. Each handler has a head lamp so you can see *just* in front of you, but can't see where the track goes or anything. Went up and down steep hills, across bogs, through ditches... Heaps of crazy terrain, but all of the dogs did GREAT, even the ones that had just started tracking! Got to bed at about 2am!

Sunday
6am - Up for breakfast, showering and looking after dogs. Elsie was not too excited to get out of bed after her 5 hours of sleep!!! We did a count up of the cloths during breakfast, then watched a display with one of the working mals that works as an explosives detective dog.
8am - Back out to the farm for more tracking! Elsie did a full size competition track, 1 hour old with 2 articles and 2 fence crossings, she did super well and I was very pleased with her!
9.30am - demonstration and judging of UD track, free track and hard surface track so we could get an idea of how it all works... Watching the free track (which is an off lead track where the handler has to stay by the start peg) was amazing, especially as a flock of sheep wandered through where the dog was working! He kept on the track and did it all though!
11am - Had a Q&A session about some of the other exercises in working trials, did a little bit of retrieve over the clear jump, did some heelwork and practiced out of sight stays.
12 - lunch!
1.30pm - Did another group track with a "rabbit", this time during the day to see how different everything is when you think you know where you are going!
3.30pm - We finished up, the winning team (the one I was on of course!) was presented with the trophy and we all went on our way

It was the most fun weekend ever, I can't wait to go back next year!
Oh and, 2 sleeps until Elsie's tracking competition.... eeeeep!

I'm tired just reading about it.

Sounds like you had a lot of fun, though. I'm looking forward to hearing about your competition. Go Elsie!

Reposting my Facebook status as I am too tired to write anything else

Soo I think we can declare our first tracking competition a success... Elsie was one of 4/11 dogs that qualified TT1a, the others being working trials champions and a TD dog... VERY proud of my girl!

No luck today, she started off great but I totally lost her when a rabbit bolted out in front of her and went up the hillside... Great weekend though!! Bring on the next one!

What a great experience that was, got lots of things to work on! The environment was tough, it was very hot up there with no shelter, where we tracked was covered with stock the day before so there was LOADS of cow, sheep and horse poop around and the hills were covered in BUNNIES!!

Elsies track went through long tussock grass, over a dried up pond through reeds as tall as me and around matagouri bushes which are a super spikey divaricating shrub (kept catching my line!!). Elsie did so well, was working really hard, and I was tough on her asking her to confirm every corner at least twice... Towards the end of the track she was so exhausted and hot, and tried to lay down under a shrub! Kept going when I asked her to though and we made it to the end of the track with about 2 minutes to spare! She indicated both articles well by picking them up.

The track was an hour old, about 700m long... Total of 220 points (20 for articles, 200 for track) we got 206 points. 3 other dogs qualified too, 2 working trials champions and one dog which is a CDX away from being a WTCH.... So yes very proud of my little girl going so well in those conditions!

Now to work on getting her to keep tracking even if we spy a bunny...

So I have mostly been voyeuring this thread, but I have another bit to contribute.

There is an IPO title now that is just an article find title. It is called StPr and can be really fun for people who aren't interested in regular IPO tracking and also a fun thing to do with retired dogs.

It can be done on virtually any field as long as it is contaminated with lots of footprints and tracks. The more contaminated, the better. There are flags at every corner and a flag to show a center line.

In the StPr1 degree, there are two SchH sized articles that the handler gives to the judge to hide. The judge puts them out one on each side of the center line.

The handler heels the dog down the center line and sends to dog to search. The handler is only allowed to walk the center line. The handler must keep the dog in the perimeter and must show directability. Once the dog catches scent of the articles, it indicates by sitting or downing. The handler then goes to retrieve the dog and article and goes back to the center line again to send the dog to the other find.

This is a video of a friend's 97 point StPr1 this weekend. I video'ed Eva's, but she was more interested in if I had a ball in my pocket than finding articles so we squeaked by with only a 78. Not a good demo video, lol!

Very interesting! Sounds a lot like the soiled area search in working trials!
Looks like lots of fun!

Anyone here know anyone really into tracking? Finished multiple CHs kinda thing, or often getting perfect tracking scores? I have taken over running the tracking page for the NZKC magazine and thought it could be cool to interview someone from overseas for an article later in the year Feel free to PM me!

I know schutzhund people, but from what you've described, I do not think they are really similar at all! Lol.

I finally got around to tracking with Argo. He is an incredible tracker. However, he gets into a bit of a frenzy with food on the track and becomes overwhelmed. He tracks better wthout food. My trainer put an FH on a dog who was never able to track with food, so I am trusting her on this one. Haha I would never recommend it to people.

I believe he may have been started in europe with forced tracking. I am not kidding that he nearly pulled me face down into a face plant when he caught scent of the track the first few times. I now have to take him out on a pinch. Granted I also work out daily and am the person that always back lines/handles strong dogs in bitework, so that says alot for him to pull me down over tracking. The days it was snowy/icy don't count of course haha I was going down then regardless!

Bumping this thread - where are all of our trackers? Coming into winter here, which is prime tracking training time! We have got a mock UD trial this weekend, so will be seeing where we're at for the whole test... Track, heelwork, sendaway, seek back, retrieve, jumps and stay. Elsie is not old enough to compete until October, but it will give us stuff to work on all summer!

As I mentioned in the other thread, we will be working on getting corners a lot more solid! A few people have said to me that dogs that do a lot of tracking before competing in UD just seem to find the tracks too easy, and will race around and lose marks for missing corners. I have a feeling this will be the case for Elsie as we have only tracked difficult terrain in the last few months, so when I had a go at a UD level track on the flat in long grass she just stuffed around and walked around the track barely putting her head down... Still went the right way and indicated articles but I could practically seeing her going "boooorrriinnggg when do we do the fun stuff?!"

So we are going to go back to lots of food on tracks to up her enthusiasm for the not very exciting UD tracks, after seeing how well she trialled in TT1 I am confident that UD tracks won't be hard, so I want to go for full marks and perfection now!

I'm here, but haven't been tracking in ages. I got sick over Christmas, and finally seemed to start getting over it about mid-March. I haven't taken either dog out in months.

Hey Rosemary are you on the yahoo AKC tracking list? I just joined as my friend said there was a bit of nasty drama on there at the moment, apparently AKC is going to allowed mixed breed dogs to do tracking? People are apparently VERY displeased. I had just assumed mixed breeds could track there! Is that why you've been doing schH tracking?

Oohhh, talk about coincidence, I emailed the AKC just today asking when/if mixed breeds were going to be allowed to do tracking. It's probably the same reaction mixed breeds got when they were allowed to do obedience, rally, and agility. I might have to join the group, though, to see what is going on. I was doing IPO style work with Ilka because mixed breeds weren't/aren't allowed in AKC tracking (yet), but are allowed to do IPO trials.

ETA: I just applied to Tracking-L. Is that the one you are talking about? I noticed after I applied that there was at least one more.

Ah, Disco, I found the list you were talking about. It's Tracking_Dog. And it's the same arguments they had about letting mixed breeds do obedience, etc. How dare us people with mixed breeds contaminate their precious purebreds?.

Like I've said, some of us have to work with what we've got, and what I'vegot is Ilka.

Yeah it's crazy eh - makes the purebred dog fancy look like a bunch of snobs! I guess I take for granted the fact that mix breeds have always been allowed to compete in sport here, in fact the first ever NZ agility grand champ is listed as a terrier x

Had a mock UD trial today, the obedience side of stuff is updated in the other thread!

Had two tracking exercises to get through today, one was the leash track and one was the seekback.

Leash track was 30 minutes old, in a flat paddock with 4 legs, only about 500m. From the second she had her harness on she was raring to go, dragging me into the paddock! Head down right away and off she went. First two legs were perfect, got to a corner and she said "it goes left mum!" and I said "no it can't that leg was too short, it must go straight"... Umm so I was wrong... once we got back on track after I made her cast around where I thought it went, she got the rest perfect as well, just one cast before the article, which was near some trees where the wind was quite swirly. I think doing a heavily baited track yesterday was good - she was concentrating hard on those corners!!

Second tracking exercise was a seekback, which to be fair we have barely trained at all (by barely, I mean we made a pathetic failed attempt at it once). We walked out to try it and I said I didn't think she would do it, but mock trial judge said just give it a go and see. So we walk in heel position for around 25 metres, I have my right hand behind my back with an article in it, on judges commands I drop the article and continue heeling for another 25 metres, right turn, then continue heeling for another 50 metres. About turn, and send dog back along where you walked to retrieve your dropped article. Elsie nailed it - I couldn't believe it! She had her nose right down in the grass and raced straight back to the article and retrieved it without hesitation. Such a gooood girl!!

Ilka and I are on the list for a 10 week AKC style tracking class if the trainer can get enough people interested. She says she likes to have about 5 or 6 people for a class. Now, I just have to tell my husband.... I think I'll just wait to see if the class makes before I do. She did say I could split up the payment, so I wouldn't have to come up with all of it at once.

Up until now, I've just been lurking on this thread, but now that Jewels has finished her CH, I want to train her to track. I"m located in Southern California, and have had NO luck finding a trainer or class. I contacted Aldercrest, and they were very nice, responded quickly, but said that they track in the Sch club and to be part of it, you have to participate in everything (I don't really know what that means).

Anyways, does anyone have any recommendations for trainers or courses in the Southern CA area?

Maybe try Ted out. He could help you in individual phases.

Clearly, I need training in Internet Searching. I've tried to find someone close with no luck, and this place is like 15 minutes from my house.

Thanks for the great tip, I will contact him
