| Hi from Portland Oregon Hi from Portland Oregon. My service dog, a standard poodle, passed away a few months ago and want to replace him with a doberman. I have MS and will need a balance dog that can gently pull me while walking.
What I am looking for is a 1 year or older doberman that is not aggressive towards people or animals. Once I find the doberman, he/she will start going to a training school and begin the long journey of becoming a service dog. We have an active life and the doberman will be with me 24/7. The poor doberman must also be able to run with my wife 4-5 miles a day rain or shine and likes to take long walks to my favorite fishing hole or just to get some coffee.
If there are any dobermans available for adoption in my area, please let me know. I understand that dobermans are different to other dogs but anyone that had a smart standard poodle will understand that my wife and I rather have a doberman because they seem to be more intuitive to the owner's needs.
Thanks...Hank |

| Hey there, dobermanhank, welcome to DT from TX!
I am so sorry about the loss of your standard poodle, I have not known many but the one I did know was brilliant and such a lover. He was a working ranch dog and totally changed my stereotypical view of poodles. I have a deep appreciation for standards because of him.
I know many will respond on a doberman's compatibility with your needs, but I just wanted to wish you well in your search! |

| I'm also from Portland. Welcome!
You may want to contact local breeders and see if they might have, or might keep an ear open for, an older dog for you. I got Silas at 8 months old. You might also contact the Mt Hood DP Club.
As far as "forced" prolonged running, it's best to wait until the dog is closer to 1 1/2 or 2. You want their growth plates to be fully closed so that you don't do long term damage. Walking is one thing, romping is another, but leashed biking or running, especially on pavement, is generally discouraged at a young age.
Good luck, and I'll keep my ears open as well! |
